NEET UG Counselling 2026 is set to become dramatically easier for lakhs of MBBS, BDS and BSc Nursing aspirants. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) is introducing several major changes to the NEET UG counselling process this year, including one-time physical reporting, online document verification and a digital resignation facility, aimed at making medical admissions simpler and less time-consuming for candidates.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Wednesday reviewed the preparedness for the forthcoming NEET UG Counselling 2026, including the counselling schedule, IT infrastructure, cybersecurity preparedness, grievance redressal mechanisms, candidate facilitation measures and coordination with participating institutions. The reforms directly address the biggest pain point of previous years — repeated, costly travel to allotted colleges for document verification and fee payment.
Under the revised framework, candidates will exercise their willingness online after seat allotment by selecting either the 'freeze' or 'float' option. Those opting for freeze will physically report to their allotted institute within the prescribed schedule to complete admission formalities, including verification of original documents and payment of the admission fee.
Candidates who choose float get an even bigger relief. They will not be required to physically report to the allotted college, submit original documents or pay the admission fee at that stage. Their provisional admission remains valid while they participate in subsequent counselling rounds, with the upgradation option available up to the third round. After the third round, candidates holding allotted seats must physically report to their institutions for original document verification, fee payment and other institutional formalities.
The net effect: one-time physical reporting, one-time verification of original documents and one-time payment of admission fees — reducing unnecessary travel, simplifying admission procedures and providing greater convenience to students.
Another student-friendly reform this year is online seat resignation. Candidates wishing to resign from their allotted seat, wherever permitted under the applicable counselling rules and timelines, will now be able to submit their resignation through the MCC Counselling Portal without physically visiting the allotted institute, unless otherwise specified in the Information Bulletin or notified separately by MCC.
Transparency and efficiency measures include pre-filled candidate data received directly from the National Testing Agency (NTA), online document verification, and seat matrix verification conducted by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and participating institutions. Admissions will now be completely digitised, with online registration, submission and verification of documents replacing the earlier email-based method.
A 24x7 toll-free call centre (1800-102-7637) has been established, and bilingual information material, FAQs and guidance videos are being made available. A dedicated email-based grievance redressal mechanism (mcc2026[at]gov[dot]in) has also been set up. Training programmes have been conducted for Disability Assessment Boards, college nodal officers and Document Verification Officers, and cybersecurity preparedness has been reviewed with the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Particular emphasis was placed on accessibility arrangements for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).
The National Testing Agency declared the NEET UG 2026 result on 16 July 2026, and the MCC counselling schedule for All India Quota (AIQ) seats is expected shortly on the official website mcc.nic.in. Candidates are advised to keep original documents ready and track mcc.nic.in for the round 1 registration dates.
