The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2026-27 registration process is officially underway. The Department of School Education and Literacy, functioning under the Ministry of Education, has opened the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) for both fresh and renewal applications. Students have time until August 31, 2026 to complete their submissions online.
The scheme is designed to support students from economically weaker backgrounds and reduce the dropout rate after Class 8. With lakhs of students expected to apply this year, education officials are urging candidates not to wait until the last date to avoid last-minute technical glitches on the NSP server.
The NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27 is open to students currently studying in Class 9 in government, government-aided, and local body schools. Students already receiving the scholarship can apply for renewal up to Class 12, provided they continue to meet the scheme's academic and income conditions.
Key eligibility points:
Applicant must be enrolled in Class 9 (fresh) or Classes 10–12 (renewal)
School must be government, government-aided, or run by a local body
Students can combine one merit-based scholarship with one or more welfare-based scholarships
Annual parental income must fall within the limit prescribed by the Ministry of Education
Applicants can complete the process directly through the official National Scholarship Portal. Here's the step-by-step application process:
Visit the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in
First-time applicants must complete new registration (One Time Registration/OTR)
Log in using the registered credentials
Select "National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme" from the list
Fill in the required personal, academic, and bank details
Upload the necessary supporting documents
Submit the completed application form
Download and save the confirmation/acknowledgment page for future reference
Tip: Keep scanned copies of income certificate, Aadhaar, previous mark sheets, and bank passbook ready before starting the form to avoid delays.
NMMSS is a centrally sponsored scheme aimed squarely at reducing school dropouts among economically disadvantaged students. Under this programme:
1 lakh fresh scholarships are awarded annually to eligible Class 9 students
Selected students receive ₹12,000 per year (₹1,000 per month)
The scholarship can be renewed every year through Class 12, subject to academic performance and eligibility conditions
Funds are disbursed via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) directly into the student's bank account
Once applications are submitted, a two-stage verification process follows before funds are released:
| Verification Level | Authority | Deadline |
| Level-1 | Institute Nodal Officer (INO) | September 15, 2026 |
| Level-2 | District Nodal Officer (DNO) | September 30, 2026 |
Students are advised to stay in touch with their school nodal officer after submitting the application to ensure Level-1 verification is completed correctly and on time — delays at this stage can hold up the entire disbursement.
