NTA Answer Key Challenge Fee Explained: Rs 200 Refunded for Valid Objections, One Accepted Challenge Benefits All Candidates — UGC NET 2026

NTA clarified that the Rs 200 answer key challenge fee is fully refunded if the objection is valid. One accepted challenge corrects the answer key for all candidates who appeared for the exam — not just the one who raised it. The rule applies to UGC-NET, JEE Main, NEET and all NTA exams.

NTA Answer Key Challenge Fee Explained: Rs 200 Refunded for Valid Objections, One Accepted Challenge Benefits All Candidates — UGC NET 2026

The National Testing Agency issued a public clarification on X defending its answer key challenge system, saying the fee discourages frivolous objections — not genuine ones — and is fully refunded when a challenge is upheld.

If you appeared for the UGC-NET June 2026 examination and have been hesitating to challenge the provisional answer key because of the Rs 200 fee, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued a direct clarification that should address your concern: the fee is refunded if your objection is found to be valid, and a single accepted challenge can correct the answer key for every candidate who appeared for the exam.

The NTA issued this clarification in a post on X on August 21, 2026, amid mounting concerns from UGC-NET 2026 candidates who felt the challenge fee was excessive or unfair.

NTA's Key Clarification: "One Challenge, Everyone Benefits"

In its statement, the NTA explained its answer key challenge process in clear terms:

"If even a single candidate challenges a question and the subject experts accept the challenge, the revised answer key applies to every candidate who wrote the exam."

This means a candidate who successfully challenges an incorrect answer does not just benefit themselves — the corrected answer key is applied uniformly across all candidates in that subject, irrespective of whether they paid the challenge fee or not.

On the Rs 200 fee, the NTA was equally direct: "Fee is refunded if you're right. The Rs 200 per question is refunded to the candidate whose challenge is upheld. The fee exists to discourage frivolous challenges, not to profit from genuine ones."

How the NTA Answer Key Challenge Process Works

The NTA answer key challenge system applies to all major NTA-conducted exams — UGC-NET, JEE Main, NEET UG, CUET, CMAT and others. Here is how it works step by step:

  1. NTA releases a provisional answer key along with the candidate's recorded responses after the exam.

  2. Candidates who disagree with any answer can raise an objection online during the challenge window.

  3. Each objection requires a processing fee of Rs 200 per question challenged.

  4. The objections are reviewed by a panel of designated subject experts.

  5. If a challenge is accepted, the provisional answer key is revised and the correction is applied uniformly to all candidates in that subject.

  6. The Rs 200 processing fee is refunded to the candidate whose challenge was upheld.

  7. If a challenge is rejected, the fee is not refunded — this is the mechanism that discourages baseless objections.

UGC-NET 2026: Re-Exam Ordered for Three Subjects

The NTA's clarification comes amid its broader UGC-NET 2026 answer key process, which has also seen the agency order a re-examination for three subjects — English, Commerce and Sociology — after errors were identified in the respective question papers. The provisional answer keys for 84 UGC-NET June 2026 subjects were released on August 16, with the challenge window closing on August 18 at 11:59 PM.

Should You Raise an Answer Key Challenge?

The NTA itself urged candidates to raise objections if they genuinely believe they have identified an error. As the agency stated, a valid challenge does not just recover your Rs 200 — it can correct a question for lakhs of candidates and improve the integrity of the final answer key.

If you are considering challenging an answer, keep the following in mind: back your objection with a credible reference — the NTA requires supporting material such as textbook citations or research references. Raising challenges without supporting evidence is unlikely to succeed and the Rs 200 will not be refunded for rejected objections.

NTA Answer Key Challenge Fee Explained FAQs

Is the Rs 200 NTA answer key challenge fee refundable?

Yes, the Rs 200 fee per question is fully refunded if the candidate's challenge is accepted by the subject expert panel.

If my UGC-NET answer key challenge is accepted, does it only benefit me?

No. An accepted challenge revises the answer key for all candidates who appeared in that subject — not just the one who raised the objection.

Why is DU offering admission without CUET?

These colleges have vacant UG seats remaining after regular CUET-based CSAS admission rounds. DU is using Class 12 marks to fill these seats rather than leave them vacant for the year.

What happens if my answer key challenge is rejected?

The Rs 200 processing fee is not refunded for rejected objections. This is intentional — to discourage frivolous or baseless challenges.
