The Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission has thrown open the registration window for the Preliminary Eligibility Test 2026. Candidates across Uttar Pradesh can now apply online at the commission's official portal, upsssc.gov.in, with the application link going live today, August 3, 2026. The last date to submit the completed form along with the fee is September 1, 2026.
The examination has been notified under Advertisement Number 16-Exam/2026, released by the commission on August 1, 2026. For lakhs of aspirants in the state, this is not simply one more recruitment form. PET is the single gate through which every candidate must pass before becoming eligible for any Group C main examination announced by UPSSSC during the score validity period. Miss this window, and the wait stretches to the next annual cycle.
The commission follows a two-tier selection structure. The Preliminary Eligibility Test forms the first tier, functioning purely as a screening and shortlisting mechanism. It does not, by itself, appoint anyone to a post. What it does is generate a normalised score card, and only holders of that valid score card are permitted to apply for the post-specific main examinations issued later by various departments.
Those main examinations cover a wide spread of Group C positions, including Lekhpal, Junior Assistant, Village Development Officer, Stenographer, Assistant Accountant, X-Ray Technician and several other posts falling under the commission's jurisdiction. Each department issues its own separate main examination advertisement with its own educational qualification requirement as prescribed under the relevant service rules. The common thread across all of them is the PET score.
In practical terms, a candidate who skips PET 2026 will find themselves locked out of every Group C main examination advertised in the coming cycle, regardless of how strong their qualifications may be.
Notification release date: August 1, 2026 Online application start date: August 3, 2026 Last date to apply online: September 1, 2026 Last date for fee payment: September 1, 2026 Application correction window: August 10, 2026 to September 8, 2026 Age reckoning date: July 1, 2026 Advertisement number: 16-Exam/2026
Aspirants are advised not to leave the submission to the final forty-eight hours. Portal traffic on UPSSSC servers historically spikes sharply near the deadline, and payment gateway failures during that crunch have derailed applications in earlier cycles.
Educational qualification: A candidate must have passed Class 10, or High School, from a recognised board. This is the floor, not the ceiling. Those holding Class 12, a diploma, a graduate degree or any higher qualification remain fully eligible to apply. The qualification must be obtained before the closing date of the application window.
Minimum age: 18 years as on July 1, 2026 Maximum age: 40 years as on July 1, 2026
Age relaxation applies to reserved category candidates in accordance with the prevailing rules of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Candidates claiming relaxation must select the correct category and relaxation head within the application form itself, since post-submission category changes are restricted.
A point worth underlining: because the eligibility bar sits at Class 10, PET typically draws one of the largest applicant pools of any state recruitment examination in India. Competition is therefore driven less by qualification and more by score.
General and OBC categories: Rs 185 SC and ST categories: Rs 95 Persons with Disability: Rs 25 as online processing charge
Payment can be made through debit card, credit card, internet banking, UPI or SBI e-challan. No offline or postal mode of payment is accepted. Candidates should note that the fee is neither refunded nor carried forward if the application is rejected, the candidature is found ineligible, or the candidate does not appear for the examination.
Candidates in specified categories such as dependents of freedom fighters, ex-servicemen, outstanding sportspersons and women candidates pay the fee applicable to their original category.
The commission accepts PET applications exclusively through the One Time Registration system. There is no route to the application form that bypasses OTR. Candidates who have not yet generated an OTR number must complete that process first on upsssc.gov.in before attempting the PET form.
This matters because details entered at the OTR stage auto-populate into the application form and several of them become locked afterwards. Once the PET 2026 registration number is generated, the name, date of birth and mobile number carried forward from OTR cannot be edited. Any typing error at the OTR stage therefore travels forward into the application and, eventually, onto the admit card and score card.
The correction window opening on August 10 permits changes to certain other fields, but it is not a blanket reset. Candidates should treat the first submission as close to final.
Step 1: Open the official website at upsssc.gov.in
Step 2: Complete One Time Registration if not already done, and note the OTR number
Step 3: Locate the PET 2026 advertisement and click on the apply online link
Step 4: Log in using the OTR number or the mobile number registered against the OTR, request the OTP, and enter the OTP along with the verification code
Step 5: Allow the OTR details to auto-fetch into the application form
\Step 6: Fill in the remaining fields, including Intermediate qualification if applicable, marital status, EWS status, Uttar Pradesh state employee status, freedom fighter dependent status, ex-serviceman status, sportsperson status, disability category and any age relaxation claim
Step 7: Upload the photograph and signature in the prescribed format and file size
Step 8: Read the declaration, select the affirmative option, enter the verification code and submit Step 9: Note down the registration number generated on the registration slip
Step 10: Proceed to payment and pay the applicable fee online
Step 11: Download and print the final application form only after payment confirmation appears
The process is treated as complete only after the fee is successfully paid. A submitted form without a confirmed payment is not a valid application.
The Preliminary Eligibility Test is conducted in offline, pen-and-paper mode with an OMR sheet.
Total questions: 100 objective type multiple choice questions Total marks: 100 Marks per correct answer: 1 Negative marking: one-fourth mark, or 0.25, deducted per wrong answer Duration: 2 hours, that is 120 minutes Difficulty level: broadly aligned with secondary and senior secondary standard
The paper spans a wide subject spread covering Indian history, the national movement, geography, Indian economy, Indian constitution and public administration, general science, elementary arithmetic, general Hindi, general English, logic and reasoning, current affairs, general awareness, unread passage analysis, graph interpretation and table interpretation.
The negative marking clause deserves attention from candidates approaching PET for the first time. With a quarter mark deducted for every incorrect response, blind guessing across a large number of questions actively pulls a score down. Selective attempting, backed by option elimination, tends to serve candidates better than volume attempting.
The PET score card is issued after normalisation across shifts. Candidates who hold a valid score card can apply for main examinations advertised by the commission during the validity period. The commission does not prescribe a single fixed qualifying mark applicable to all recruitments; category-wise cut-offs are determined subsequently in the context of each main examination.
For candidates planning realistically, the practical implication is that merely appearing in PET is not the goal. The score achieved determines which main examinations remain within reach, since departments shortlist from PET scores in a fixed ratio to advertised vacancies.
Class 10 certificate and marksheet for date of birth and qualification details Higher qualification certificates, if applicable Category certificate for reserved category candidates EWS certificate where applicable Domicile documents for Uttar Pradesh Recent passport size photograph in the prescribed dimensions Scanned signature in the prescribed dimensions Aadhaar or other identity document details as required in the form Active mobile number and email ID linked to the OTR A functional payment instrument for online fee payment
Applications get rejected every cycle for reasons that are entirely avoidable. The recurring ones include mismatched details between the OTR record and supporting certificates, photographs that do not meet size or clarity specifications, signatures uploaded in block capitals rather than a running hand, category claimed without possession of a valid certificate on the reckoning date, and forms submitted without completing the payment leg.
Candidates should also retain a printed copy of the final submitted application along with the payment receipt. These serve as the primary evidence in the event of any discrepancy at the admit card stage.
The window is open for twenty-nine days. The sensible sequence is to complete OTR today if it is pending, gather the document set, apply within the first fortnight, verify every field against original certificates during the correction window, and then shift entirely to preparation.
Given that the eligibility threshold is Class 10, the applicant volume for PET 2026 is expected to run into several lakhs. In an examination of that scale, the difference between qualifying comfortably and falling short of the cut-off is usually made in the general awareness, current affairs and reasoning segments, and in disciplined avoidance of negative marking.
Candidates should keep visiting upsssc.gov.in for the exam date announcement, admit card release and any subsequent corrigendum issued by the commission.
