Indian Nursing Council

Indian Nursing Council (INC) was established back in 1949 to ensure uniform nursing standards across the country. The Indian Nursing Council Registration 2024 process has evolved with modern advancement. Trained nurses can now register online on the official website of INC.

However, State Nursing Registration Councils (SNRCs)  will continue to play the legal role of providing licenses to registered nurses for practice. In order to register with the Indian Nursing Council nurses must have the necessary professional qualification identified by it.

About the Indian Nursing Council

The Indian Nursing Council (INC) is an autonomous body that was established under the INC Act 1947. INC has a crucial role in regulating the training of nurses, standards of education, and curriculum in India. It also deals with the issues related to recognizing the foreign qualification related to nursing. Indian Nursing Council not only supervises the state nursing councils but also approves nursing institutions and maintains a central register of nurses. It has recently launched the Nurse Registration and Tracking System (NRTS), a single integrated portal for nurses or a Live Register of Nurses. For qualified individuals who are seeking recognition as trained nurses, registration with the INC is mandatory. Without it, they can not practice in any top hospital or government colleges. Almost every nursing exam requires Indian Nursing Council registration from candidates.

Indian Nursing Council Approved Courses

To become a registered nurse in India, candidates must complete a course recognized by the INC. Indian Nursing Council has approved several certificates, diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate courses for aspiring nurses. Once candidates have passed an INC-approved course they are eligible to apply for INC registration. These courses include: Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery (ANM): It is a two-year duration vocational course for candidates who have just completed 10+2 from any subject. The age of candidates should be at least 17 years and no more than 35 years. General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM): Contrary to ANM, the duration of the GNM course is three years and it is a diploma-level course. Candidates must have 40% marks in class 12th or the ANM vocational course. While the minimum age limit is similar to the ANM course, there is no maximum age limit for registered ANM nurses. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc. N): It is a degree-level course of a four-year duration. Students must have science (PCB) and English subjects in class 12th to apply for this course with aggregate marks of 45%. BSc Nursing has some advantages over ANM and GNM courses and students can become registered nurses (RNs) after this course. Post Basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing ( P.B. B. Sc. N): Post Basic BSc Nursing is a professional course to train registered nurses. It is an advanced-level undergraduate course of 2-year duration that is pursued by GNM Nurses registered as R.N.R.M. Master of Science in Nursing (M.Sc. N): As the name suggests, it is a postgraduate course of two-year duration. Students can pursue this course for higher education in the nursing field after B.Sc Nursing, B.Sc. Hons. Nursing, or Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing courses. Candidates must have 55% aggregate marks and be R.N. or R.M. to apply.
