The American Invitational Mathematics Examination is an advanced mathematics competition for students who achieve qualifying scores in the AMC 10 or AMC 12. It forms part of the MAA's invitational competition sequence, which continues with the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO).
AIME questions are more challenging than those in the AMC 10 and AMC 12. The competition is designed to assess mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Performance in AIME also plays an important role in selection for subsequent mathematics olympiads.

Students must meet the MAA's qualification and eligibility requirements to register for AIME 2027. The published qualifying score thresholds are:
AMC 10: A score of 100 or above.
AMC 12: A score of 85 or above.
Minimum age: Students must be at least 13 years old to take AIME in 2027.
Meeting the score threshold alone may not be sufficient if other eligibility requirements are not met. Students should review the complete rules on the official MAA website before making registration arrangements. Students younger than 13 will not be eligible to participate in the 2027 examination.
