INAO Eligibility 2027: Qualification, Age Limit and Selection Process

The Indian National Astronomy Olympiad (INAO) is the second stage of India’s national selection programme for the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). For students aspiring to represent India internationally, understanding the INAO eligibility criteria is important before beginning the selection process.

According to the official Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), students aspiring to participate in the International Olympiads in 2027 must first enrol for the respective National Standard Examination (NSE) conducted in 2026. For Astronomy, this first-stage examination is the National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA).

INAO Eligibility 2027

The eligibility rules for the Astronomy Olympiad apply to students participating in NSEA and the subsequent stages, including INAO. The official HBCSE eligibility specifies the following criteria for the 2026–27 Science Olympiad programme:

• Indian Passport: The student must be eligible to hold an Indian passport.

• Date of Birth: The student must be born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2012, both dates inclusive.

• Residence or Schooling: The student must have been residing and studying in India since 30 November 2024 or earlier, or must have been studying in an Indian school system since that date.

• Class Eligibility: The student must be studying in Class X, XI, or XII at the time of enrolment.

• Class XII Board Examination: The student must not have passed, or be scheduled to complete, the Class XII board examination earlier than 30 November 2026.

• NSEJS Restriction: The student must not be appearing for the National Standard Examination in Junior Science (NSEJS) 2026.

• University Studies: The student must not have started, or plan to start, studies at a university or equivalent institution by 1 June 2027.

Students are responsible for checking whether they satisfy all the eligibility conditions. HBCSE states that if a candidate is later found to be ineligible, they may be disqualified from the programme.

INAO Eligibility for Indian Passport Holders

One of the important eligibility conditions concerns nationality. Candidates must be eligible to hold an Indian passport.

The current HBCSE rules also contain a specific provision concerning Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). According to the official eligibility, OCI students are not eligible for selection to the Indian team for the International Olympiads under the current court-related policy. However, they may be provisionally eligible for earlier stages up to and including the Orientation-cum-Selection Camp (OCSC), provided they meet the other criteria. The policy may change depending on further court or government orders.

INAO Age Limit 2027

Age is another important part of INAO eligibility. For the 2026–27 Astronomy Olympiad programme, eligible candidates must have their date of birth between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2012, inclusive.

This date-of-birth requirement should be checked carefully because candidates outside the specified range may not be eligible for the Science Olympiad selection programme, even if they meet the educational requirements.

INAO Class Eligibility

Students studying in Class X, XI, or XII at the time of enrolment are eligible under the current criteria for Astronomy.

The eligibility rules also specify that candidates must not have passed or be scheduled to complete their Class XII board examination before 30 November 2026. Students should therefore consider both their current class and their board-examination status while checking eligibility.

NSEA to INAO Selection Process

INAO is the Stage II examination of the Astronomy Olympiad selection programme. Students aspiring to progress to INAO must first appear for the NSEA 2026, subject to the applicable eligibility criteria.

After NSEA, eligible candidates are shortlisted for INAO based on the Stage I selection criteria prescribed for the Astronomy Olympiad. Therefore, meeting the NSEA eligibility requirements alone does not guarantee selection for INAO.

Candidates should follow the official HBCSE and IAPT announcements for NSEA results, INAO shortlisting and subsequent examination details.

INAO Eligibility 2027 requires students to meet specific conditions related to age, nationality, schooling, and academic status.
