INPhO Eligibility

INPhO Eligibility 2027 is based on the eligibility rules prescribed by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) for the 2026–27 Science Olympiad Programme. Students must meet conditions related to nationality, date of birth, residence, school class, Class 12 status, NSEJS participation, and university enrolment.

The Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO) is the Stage II examination in the Physics Olympiad pathway. Students aspiring to appear for INPhO must first participate in the National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP) and qualify through the prescribed selection process. For the 2026–27 cycle, NSEP is scheduled for November 22, 2026, while INPhO is scheduled for January 31, 2027.

INPhO Eligibility 2027 Overview

Students must meet all the prescribed eligibility conditions to participate in the Physics Olympiad selection process. The official HBCSE eligibility page specifies the following criteria for Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Olympiad stages.

Eligibility Criteria

Requirement

Nationality

Must be eligible to hold an Indian passport

Date of Birth

Between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2012, both days inclusive

Residence/Study

Must be residing and studying in India since November 30, 2024 or earlier, or studying in an Indian school system since that date

Class

Must be studying in Class X, XI or XII at enrolment

Class XII Board Exam

Must not have passed or be scheduled to complete Class XII board examination earlier than November 30, 2026

NSEJS

Must not appear for NSEJS 2026

University Studies

Must not have started or plan to start university/equivalent studies by June 1, 2027

Nationality Requirement for INPhO 2027

According to HBCSE, a candidate must be eligible to hold an Indian passport to participate in the Physics Olympiad selection process. The official eligibility page also contains a specific provision concerning OCI students.

As stated by HBCSE, following orders of the Madras High Court, OCI students are not eligible for selection to the Indian team for the International Olympiads. However, they are provisionally eligible for selection at prior stages up to and including the Orientation/Selection Camps (OCSC), provided they fulfil all other eligibility conditions. The policy may be revised depending on further court or government orders.

INPhO 2027 Age Limit

For the 2026–27 Science Olympiad cycle, candidates must have been born between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2012, with both dates included. Students whose date of birth falls outside this range will not satisfy the prescribed eligibility criterion.

Students should carefully verify their date of birth against the official requirement before enrolling for the first-stage examination.

Educational Qualification for INPhO 2027

Candidates must be studying in Class X, XI, or XII at the time of enrolment. Additionally, they must not have passed, or be scheduled to complete, their Class XII board examination before November 30, 2026.

This means students who have already completed their Class XII board examination before the specified cut-off do not meet the eligibility requirement for this cycle.

Residence and Schooling Requirement

Another important condition relates to residence and schooling. Candidates must have been residing and studying in India since November 30, 2024 or earlier, or must have been studying in an Indian school system since that date.

Students should check this requirement carefully because fulfilling the academic criteria alone does not automatically establish eligibility.

Can Students Appearing for NSEJS Apply for INPhO?

The official eligibility criteria state that a candidate must not be appearing for the National Standard Examination in Junior Science (NSEJS) 2026. Therefore, students planning to participate in the Physics Olympiad pathway should ensure that they meet this condition.

University Admission and INPhO Eligibility

Students must also consider their higher-education status. HBCSE states that candidates must not have commenced, or be planning to commence, studies in a university or equivalent institution by June 1, 2027.

This condition is particularly important for students moving from school to undergraduate education during the Olympiad cycle.

How to Reach INPhO 2027?

The Science Olympiad programme follows a five-stage selection process for Physics. The first stage is the National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP), followed by the Indian National Olympiad in Physics (INPhO). Subsequent stages include the Orientation and Selection Camp and further stages leading to the International Physics Olympiad team.

For the 2026–27 cycle, the official schedule lists NSEP on November 22, 2026, from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by INPhO on January 31, 2027, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. The list of students selected for INOs is scheduled to be published by January 15, 2027, on the IAPT website. Students appearing for INPhO must then register on the HBCSE website to obtain their admit cards; this registration is mandatory.
