SOF International Social Studies Olympiad (ISSO): Exam Dates, Eligibility, Pattern, Syllabus & Preparation

The SOF International Social Studies Olympiad (ISSO) is an annual academic competition organised by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) for students of Classes 3 to 10. 

The Olympiad assesses students' knowledge and skills in Social Studies while providing a platform to identify and nurture academic talent. It also aims to encourage problem-solving, critical thinking, and cognitive skills among students.

SOF International Social Studies Olympiad (ISSO) 2026-27 Overview

The SOF ISSO 2026-27 is conducted once a year and is open to eligible students from Classes 3 to 10. The examination is conducted offline through schools and is available in English. The duration of the examination is one hour.

Students must be enrolled in a school recognised by SOF and can appear only for the Olympiad corresponding to their class.

SOF ISSO Exam Dates 2026-27

SOF has announced two dates for the International Social Studies Olympiad Level 1 for the 2026-27 academic year:

• Date 1: 30 November 2026

• Date 2: 19 January 2027

Schools can select the examination date according to their convenience. Separate question papers are used for the two examination dates.

SOF ISSO Eligibility Criteria

Students studying in Classes 3 to 10 in a school recognised by SOF are eligible to participate in the ISSO. Students can appear only for their respective class-level Olympiad, and there are no other eligibility conditions specified on the official page.

The registration process is school-based. Students cannot submit individual applications directly to SOF. Applications are submitted through the respective schools, and the form should be submitted at least 30 days before the examination date.

SOF ISSO Exam Pattern 2026-27

The SOF ISSO is a single-level examination consisting of objective-type multiple-choice questions. The number and distribution of questions vary according to the class group.

For Classes 3 and 4, the paper contains 35 questions carrying 40 marks. For Classes 5 to 8, there are 50 questions carrying 60 marks. For Classes 9 and 10, the paper also contains 50 questions for 60 marks, divided among History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, and the Achievers Section.

The paper for Classes 3 to 8 has Social Studies and Achievers sections, while Classes 9 and 10 have separate sections for History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, and Achievers.

SOF ISSO Syllabus

Students should understand their class-wise syllabus before preparing for ISSO, as topics and question distribution vary by grade. The main syllabus points include:

• Class-wise syllabus: The SOF ISSO syllabus varies according to the student's class.

• Core subjects: Senior classes cover History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics.

• Classes 9 and 10: The paper includes separate sections for these four subjects along with Higher Order Thinking questions.

• Class 10 topics: Important areas include Nationalism, Globalisation, Resources and Development, Political Parties, Democracy, the Indian Economy, Money and Credit, and Consumer Rights.

• Question distribution: 70% of questions are based on the current class syllabus, while 30% are based on the previous class syllabus. The Achievers Section is based only on the current class syllabus.

SOF ISSO Sample Papers

SOF has released ISSO 2026-27 sample papers to help students become familiar with the examination format and practise questions. Students can use these papers for revision, question-solving practice, and understanding the type of questions asked in the Olympiad.

How to Prepare for SOF ISSO?

Students should begin preparation by understanding their class-wise syllabus and examination pattern. A systematic preparation approach can include the following steps:

1. Understand the syllabus: Identify the History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, and other Social Studies topics prescribed for the class.

2. Strengthen fundamentals: Study textbook concepts carefully and focus on understanding rather than memorising isolated facts.

3. Practise sample papers: Solve SOF ISSO sample papers to become familiar with objective-type questions and the exam format.

4. Revise regularly: Make concise notes of important concepts, facts, terms, and topics that require frequent revision.

5. Work on problem-solving: Practise questions that require students to apply concepts and analyse information rather than simply recall facts.

SOF also recommends practising sample and previous-year question papers, strengthening Social Studies fundamentals, and using relevant Olympiad books and learning resources to broaden knowledge.

SOF ISSO Awards, Scholarships, and Recognition

The SOF ISSO provides recognition to participating students and winners. For the 2026-27 academic year, awards include international, zonal, and school topper awards for Classes 3 to 10. The top three international rank holders receive cash awards, medals, and certificates, while other winners receive recognition at their respective levels.

Participating students also receive a Certificate of Participation and a detailed Student Progress Report. SOF additionally recognises schools, principals, and teachers for their contribution to students' performance and participation.
