The examination consists of two sections. Section A has 48 multiple-choice questions with one correct option. A correct answer carries 3 marks, while an incorrect answer has a 1-mark penalty. Section B has 12 multiple-choice questions carrying 6 marks each. These questions can have one or more correct options. Marks are awarded only when all correct options and no incorrect options are selected.
The NSEP merit list will be released as per the criteria specified by IAPT. The examination information states that merit certificates are awarded to students in the top 1% in each state and subject.
Certificates are also given to the top 10% of students at every examination centre. Special merit certificates and a prize in the form of a book are awarded to students in the national top 1% in Physics, Astronomy and Junior Science.
