The Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) has officially announced the schedule for the National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP) 2026. Centre registration will be conducted from 1 August to 20 August 2026, while student enrolment will begin on 21 August 2026 and continue until 14 September 2026 through the official IAPT website.

The NSEP 2026 examination will be held on Sunday, 22 November 2026, from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM. NSEP is the first stage of India's Physics Olympiad programme, leading to subsequent stages such as INPhO and the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO).

NSEP Full Form 

NSEP stands for "National Standard Examination in Physics". It was first conducted in 1987 by IAPT and serves as the initial stage for selecting students for the Indian and International Physics Olympiad. NSEP is held nationwide at a regional level and is offered in English, Hindi, and other Indian languages.

Stages of After NSEP 2026

NSEP serves as the first stage aims to identify and nurture young talent in physics. the National Standard Examination, is entirely under the responsibility of the Physics Teachers' Association of India. All other stages are organized by HBCSE. NSEP is an essential qualification to join INPhO.

Stage 1 – NSEP- National Standard Examination in Physics.

Stage 2 – INPhO- Indian National Physics Olympiad

Stage 3 – OCSC- The Orientation cum Selection Camp in physics.

Stage 4 PDT- Pre-departure Training Camp for IPhO.

NSEP 2026 Eligibility

The first step before registering for NSEP 2026 is to check your exam eligibility. Here are the complete eligibility requirements for the NSEP Olympiad

  • Must be eligible to hold an Indian passport

  • Must be residing and studying in India since 30 November 2024 or earlier.

  • Candidates must be born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2012 (both dates inclusive).

  • Must not have completed (or scheduled to complete) class 12 board examination earlier than 30 November 2026.

  • Must not have commenced (or planning to commence) studies in a university or equivalent institution by 1 June 2027.

  • Must not be appearing in NSEJS 2026

NSEP Registration 2026

The registration process for NSEP 2026 has been officially announced by IAPT. Recognized schools, junior colleges, and other approved examination centres must first complete centre registration between 1 August and 20 August 2026.

After the completion of centre registration, students can enrol for the examination from 21 August to 14 September 2026. Students may register either through their registered examination centre or individually via the official IAPT portal.

How to Register for NSEP 2026

Students can register for NSEP examination 2026 through selected centres. IAPT also accepts direct student registration. When registering through the center, the applicant must pay the NSEP fee to the responsible center. For direct registration, students can pay the NSEP registration fee online.   • Visit the official IAPT website at https://www.iapt.org.in.

  • Check whether your school is a registered examination centre.

  • Schools must complete centre registration from 1 August to 20 August 2026.

  • Students can register from 21 August to 14 September 2026.

  • Fill in the required details and complete the enrolment process.

  • Submit the application before the last date.

NSEP 2026 Application Fee 

Students have to pay a registration fee of Rs.300 to complete the online registration process of NSEP 2026.

This is a one-time fee and students who progress to the next stage and progress further do not have to pay until the final stage, the International Physics Olympiad. The NSEP 2026 registration fees are non-refundable once paid.

NSEP Exam Pattern 2026

Level of Question Paper: Is broadly equivalent to senior secondary level (up to and including Class XII) of CBSE India.

Language of Question Paper: English, Hindi, Gujarati, Bangla, Kannada, Tamil & Telugu or any Indian Language provided 300 students OPT for it (option during registration)

Question Paper Pattern : 

A) 48 multiple choice questions with one alternative correct. +3 marks credit for correct choice. --1 mark penalty for incorrect choice.

B) 12 multiple choice questions each of six marks with one or more than one correct alternatives. To get credit, all the correct option(s) and no incorrect option (s) should be marked.

NSEP Syllabus 2026

As per the official notification, the NSEP 2026 Syllabus is based on the CBSE Class 12 Physics syllabus. Students should prepare topics from both Class 11 and Class 12 Physics. The detailed chapter-wise syllabus remains largely consistent with previous years.

NSEP Exam Benefits and Perks

  • APhO: About 8 toppers from INPho and NSEP may get an opportunity to participate in the Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO), APhO will be held in May 2027.

  • Report card will be generated for all the candidates and can be downloadedfromiapt.org.inby theenrolledstudents.

  • Certificates are given to 'top 10%' students of every centre 

  • Merit Certificates are awarded to 'top 1%' students in each state, in each subject.

  • Special Merit Certificates and a prize (book) are awarded to 'Nationaltop1%'studentsinPhysics,Astronomy&JuniorScience

  • Gold Medals are awarded to all students attending OCSC in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy & Junior Science.
