Analogical reasoning identifies the relationship between a pair of words and applies it to another. For example, Church relates to Christians as Synagogue relates to Jews, illustrating a religious group and their primary place of worship.

Number Series and Analogy: Multiplier Pattern

To solve problems like 72:90 :: 48:60 :: 24:?, observe the pattern. Each pair follows an 8:10 ratio, represented as (N × 8) : (N × 10). For instance, 72 (9×8) and 90 (9×10); 48 (6×8) and 60 (6×10). Applying this, 24 (3×8) leads to 3 × 10 = 30.

Coding-Decoding: Opposite Letters

In coding-decoding, letters are replaced by other letters based on a rule. A common rule uses opposite letters from the alphabet. For example, if BRAIN is coded as YIZRM, then ENVY would be coded as VMEB (B→Y, E→V, N→M, V→E, Y→B).

Number Series: Alternate Series

Consider the series: 40, 48, 41, 16, 42, 8, 43, ?. This is an alternate series with two interleaved patterns:

  • Odd Positions: 40, 41, 42, 43 follow a +1 pattern.

  • Even Positions: 48, 16, 8, ? follow a division by decreasing consecutive integers pattern (48÷3=16, 16÷2=8). Thus, the next number is 8÷1=8.

Non-Verbal Reasoning: Image Transformations

This category involves identifying visual patterns, rotations, or reflections.

  • Image Rotation: Figures transform by rotating (e.g., 90° clockwise) in a sequence.

  • Mirror/Water Image: Reflection across an axis. Water images specifically involve vertical inversion (top and bottom parts swap).

Seating Arrangement: Circular Configuration

Seating arrangement problems involve placing individuals around a circle based on positional clues. When everyone faces the center, Right is clockwise and Left is counter-clockwise. The solution involves systematically placing individuals using direct clues, relative positions, and exclusions to determine the final arrangement or answer a specific question.

Blood Relations: Identifying Sibling Relationship

Consider the statement: "His brother's father is the only son of my paternal/maternal grandfather." To deduce the relationship, break down the statement. "My grandfather's only son" refers to the woman's father. "His brother's father" refers to the man's father. Since they share the same father, the woman is the man's sister.

Venn Diagram: Overlapping Sets

Venn diagrams use overlapping circles to visually represent relationships between different sets. The overlapping region indicates elements common to multiple sets. For instance, to find elements common to "Boys," "Racers," and "Gymnasts," locate the region where all three circles overlap.

Syllogism: Rules of Inference

Syllogism is a logical reasoning method where a conclusion is derived from two or more statements (premises). Solutions can use the Direct Connection Method (checking for links between terms) or the Venn Diagram Method (visualizing set relationships). For example, from "Some pens are books" and "Some books are pencils," no definite conclusion can be drawn about "pens" and "pencils."

Inequalities: Transitivity and Symbol Strength

Inequalities compare quantities using symbols like >, <, ≥, ≤, =. Conclusions are drawn using transitivity (e.g., if T > C and C > B, then T > B). Stronger symbols (>, <) take precedence. If inequality signs point in opposite directions, no definite conclusion can be established.

Ranking and Order: Position Shift

To solve problems like: "In a row of 16 girls, Seema is shifted two places to the left, making her 7th from the left end. What was her original position from the right end?"

  1. Original position from left = 7 (new left) + 2 (shift right) = 9th.

  2. Use the formula: Total persons = Position from Left + Position from Right - 1.

  3. 16 = 9 + Position from Right - 1, solving this gives Position from Right = 8th.

Alphabet Series: Character Position Counting

This involves determining a character's position in a sequence based on cumulative shifts. For example, to find the third character to the right of the 12th character from the left end, you calculate 12 (from the left) + 3 (right shift) = 15th from the left.

Logical Classification: Hierarchical Ordering

This task involves arranging items in a logical, hierarchical sequence, typically from largest to smallest or vice-versa. For Universe, Earth, Galaxy, Human, the order from largest to smallest is: Universe → Galaxy → Earth → Human.

Calendar Reasoning: Calculating Odd Days

The day of the week advances by 'odd days' each year. A normal year has 1 odd day, while a leap year has 2 odd days. To find the day of the week for Oct 18, 2005, if Oct 18, 2003 was Saturday:

  1. From Oct 18, 2003, to Oct 18, 2004 (includes Feb 29, 2004) = 2 odd days.

  2. From Oct 18, 2004, to Oct 18, 2005 = 1 odd day.

  3. Total odd days = 2 + 1 = 3 odd days.

  4. Saturday + 3 days = Tuesday.

Analogical Reasoning: Function and Tool

In analogies like "Cold : Refrigerator :: Hot : ?", identify the relationship: a refrigerator is a tool that causes cold (Effect : Tool). Following this, an oven is a tool that causes hot. Therefore, the answer is Hot : Oven.

Coding-Decoding: Sequential Odd Number Shift

In problems like "MERGE is coded as NHRGP. Code MORCH?", identify the pattern. Each letter in MERGE shifts by sequential odd numbers: M(+1)→N, E(+3)→H, R(+5)→W, G(+7)→N, E(+9)→P. Applying this +1, +3, +5, +7, +9 pattern to MORCH gives: M(+1)→N, O(+3)→R, R(+5)→W, C(+7)→J, H(+9)→Q. The code for MORCH is NRWJQ.

Odd One Out: Image Classification

In "odd one out" problems with images, identify the figure that does not share a common visual attribute with the others. For example, if three figures contain two lines and one figure contains only one line, the single-line figure is the odd one out.

Distance and Direction: Displacement Calculation

To determine the final position: Rana travels 3km South, turns left 2km (East), turns left 3km (North), turns left 1km (West).

  • South (3km) and North (3km) movements cancel out.

  • East (2km) and West (1km) result in a net 1km East.
    His home is East of the school.

Blood Relations: Unverifiable Statement

Consider statements: "A is the sister of B and C. D is C's father. E is A's mother." Here, A, D, and E's genders are known, making D and E the parents of A, B, and C. However, B's gender is unknown. Therefore, a statement like "B is E's son" cannot be verified as B could be a daughter.

Mathematical Operations: Symbol Substitution and Order of Operations

Given symbol definitions (α=÷, γ=-, β=×, Ω=+) and an expression like 8 α 6 γ 4 β 7 Ω 3.

  1. Substitute symbols: 8 ÷ 6 - 4 × 7 + 3.

  2. Apply BODMAS/PEMDAS:

  • Division: 8 ÷ 6 = 4/3

  • Multiplication: 4 × 7 = 28

  • Result: 4/3 - 28 + 3

  • Simplify: 4/3 - 25 = (4 - 75)/3 = -71/3.

Venn Diagram: Categorization

To represent the relationship between Vegetation, Jupiter, and Earth:

  • Jupiter and Earth are distinct planets, so they are represented by separate circles.

  • Vegetation exists on Earth, so the "Vegetation" circle is placed entirely inside the "Earth" circle.

  • There is no known vegetation on Jupiter, so the "Jupiter" circle remains separate from "Vegetation."

Syllogism Problem Solving Example

Statements:

  1. Some Biscuits are Cookies.

  2. Some Cookies are Pastries.

  3. All Pastries are Cream.

Conclusions to Evaluate:

  1. Some Pastries are Biscuits. (False, no direct or inferred link)

  2. Some Cream are Biscuits. (False, no definite link established)
