Railway Recruitment Boards conduct the NTPC examination to recruit candidates across undergraduate and graduate posts. Due to declining vacancy trends and policy updates, understanding zone-wise competition is critical for aspirants. Candidates must assess historical cut-off spreads and regional applicant volumes to build an effective scoring benchmark for both CBT-1 and CBT-2 stages.
A total of 1,688 vacancies are available across four primary undergraduate posts:
Commercial cum Ticket Clerk: 700 posts
Accounts Clerk cum Typist: 200 posts
Junior Clerk cum Typist: 600 posts
Train Clerk: 188 posts
Category-Wise Breakdown:

The selection procedure uses a two-stage Computer Based Test format.
| Exam Stage / Parameters | CBT-1 (Screening) | CBT-2 (Final Merit) |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 90 Minutes | 90 Minutes |
| General Awareness / GK | 40 Questions | 50 Questions |
| Mathematics (Arithmetic + Adv.) | 30 Questions | 35 Questions |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 30 Questions | 35 Questions |
| Total Questions | 100 Questions | 120 Questions |
Status of Typing Test: The standalone qualifying Typing Skill Test has been completely eliminated from the preliminary recruitment stages.
Selection Criteria: Final merit lists depend solely on performance in CBT-1 and CBT-2.
Impact on Merit: Earlier recruitment drives had lower written cut-offs for clerical posts because of the skill test barrier. With this requirement removed, cut-offs will directly reflect raw test performance. Candidates only need basic typing proficiency after joining the service.
For the latest available question-paper resource, candidates can also check the RRB NTPC UG 2026 Question Paper.
Recruitment data shows a steady reduction in total vacancies over recent cycles:
2019 Cycle: ~24,678 vacancies (conducted after a multi-year gap).
Recent Graduating Cycles: Dropped from ~8,124 vacancies to 3,548 vacancies for NTPC Graduate posts.
Key Takeaway: Lower vacancy numbers mean candidates must secure higher percentiles to clear regional cut-offs.
Top Zones by Vacancy Count: Bilaspur holds the highest number of vacancies, followed by Ranchi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ajmer, Siliguri, and Prayagraj.
Low Vacancy Zones: Ahmedabad and Thiruvananthapuram.
Regions such as Chennai and Bhubaneswar historically showed minimal score gaps between CBT-1 and CBT-2 (often within 0.4 to 1 mark).
Highly competitive zones like Bhopal, Ajmer, and Chandigarh recorded significant cut-off escalations, ranging between 77 to 88 marks.
Railway zones fall into three distinct risk tiers based on applicant volume and historical competition:
| Zone Risk Tier | Associated Railway Zones | Target Cut-Off Range |
|---|---|---|
| Safe Zones | Zones with favorable applicant-to-seat ratios | 70 – 75 Marks |
| Medium / Mid Zones | Zones with moderate competitive spread | 75 – 82 Marks |
| Danger Zones | High-density zones with top-tier competition (e.g., Prayagraj) | 85 – 92+ Marks |
Target Score: Aim for an 80+ to 88+ raw score out of 100 with at least 90% Accuracy.
Minimum qualifying marks do not guarantee selection. Candidates must aim well above the baseline cut-off to secure a position in the final merit list.
RRB NTPC Graduate Level: Exams are scheduled for the last week of December.
RRB NTPC Undergraduate (UG) Level: Examinations are projected to start around mid-January.
