The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) 2026 recruitment drive has emerged as one of the largest in the country’s history, with 3.58 crore candidates appearing for examinations across multiple posts and categories. This massive mobilisation covers both technical and non-technical positions in Indian Railways, ensuring a transparent and streamlined recruitment process.

3.58 Crore Candidates Appeared in 2024 Exams

During the 2024 recruitment cycle, a total of 3,58,59,270 candidates appeared for various RRB Computer-Based Tests (CBTs).​
These exams were conducted across up to 157 cities and in up to 15 languages, underscoring the nationwide scale and multilingual outreach of RRB recruitment.

Overview of Vacancies and Exams

During January to December 2024, RRB issued 10 Centralised Employment Notifications (CENs) for a total of 92,116 vacancies. These included highly sought-after posts such as:

  • Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP): 18,799 vacancies

  • Technician: 14,298 vacancies

  • Junior Engineer / Depot Material Superintendent / CMA: 7,951 vacancies

  • RPF Sub-Inspector: 452 vacancies

  • RPF Constable: 4,208 vacancies

  • Paramedical Categories: 1,376 vacancies

  • RRB Non-Technical Popular Categories (Graduate): 8,113 vacancies

  • Non-Technical Popular Categories (Undergraduate): 3,445 vacancies

  • Ministerial & Isolated Categories: 1,036 vacancies

  • Level-1 Posts: 32,438 vacancies

These vacancies saw an unprecedented turnout of candidates, with millions appearing for first-stage or single-stage Computer Based Tests (CBTs). For example, the Level-1 post CBT alone witnessed over 1.08 crore candidates, making it one of the largest recruitment exams in India.

Second Stage CBT and Specialised Tests

Following the first-stage exams, second-stage CBTs were conducted for posts including ALP, JE/DMS/CMA, and Non-Technical Popular Categories. A total of 5.57 lakh candidates appeared in these advanced stages.

In addition, Computer-Based Aptitude Tests (CBAT) and Skill/Typing Tests were held for ALP, graduate-level Non-Technical Popular Categories, and Ministerial & Isolated posts. Combined, these tests accounted for 1.90 lakh candidates across multiple cities and languages.

Recruitment Panels and Safety Categories

RRB has finalised panels for over 41,000 candidates across key safety and technical positions such as Technicians, Junior Engineers, Paramedical Staff, Sub-Inspectors, Constables, and Assistant Loco Pilots. These appointments aim to strengthen critical operational areas in Indian Railways.

Recruitment Calendar 2025 and Upcoming Vacancies

As per the RRB Annual Calendar for 2025, nine CENs have been issued for 50,970 vacancies. Key notifications include:

  • Assistant Loco Pilots: 9,970 vacancies (March 2025)

  • Technicians: 6,238 vacancies (June 2025)

  • Paramedical Categories: 434 vacancies (July 2025)

  • Section Controllers: 368 vacancies (August 2025)

  • Junior Engineers / Depot Material Superintendent: 2,585 vacancies (October 2025)

  • Non-Technical Popular Categories (Graduate & Undergraduate): 8,868 vacancies (October 2025)

  • Isolated Categories: 312 vacancies (December 2025)

  • Level-1 Posts: 22,195 vacancies (December 2025)

The first-stage CBTs for these vacancies have already been conducted for 12,923 posts, involving over 20 lakh candidates.
