RRB Section Controller Medical Standard is based on the A-2 Medical Standard prescribed by the Railway Recruitment Board for candidates applying for the RRB Section Controller post. Since this is a safety-critical role, candidates must be physically fit and meet strict vision requirements. 

They must have 6/9 distant vision and Sn 0.6 near vision in both eyes without glasses, along with normal colour vision, binocular vision, night vision, and myopic vision. Candidates who have undergone LASIK or any other refractive eye surgery are not eligible for this post.

RRB Section Controller Medical Standard

The RRB Section Controller Medical Standard is based on the A-2 Medical Standard prescribed in the Railway Recruitment notification. It ensures that candidates are medically fit to perform safety-sensitive operational duties in Indian Railways.

The medical examination is conducted after the Document Verification (DV) stage at designated Railway Hospitals.

The RRB Section Controller A-2 Medical Standard evaluates two major aspects:

  • Overall physical fitness

  • Visual acuity and eye health

Candidates must satisfy both requirements to qualify for appointment.

Vision is one of the most important components of the RRB Section Controller Medical Fitness Criteria. Since the job involves monitoring train movements, railway signals, and operational control systems, candidates must have excellent natural vision.

Important Points

  • Glasses or contact lenses are not permitted to meet the prescribed visual acuity.

  • No Fogging Test will be conducted.

  • Candidates must have normal colour perception to identify railway signal colours accurately.

  • Depth perception and night vision must also meet the prescribed standards.

RRB Section Controller Medical Fitness Criteria

The RRB Section Controller Medical Fitness Criteria include a complete medical examination conducted by Railway Medical Authorities.

The examination generally covers:

Physical Examination

  • General physical health

  • Blood pressure

  • Cardiovascular health

  • Respiratory system

  • Hearing ability

  • Speech clarity

  • Musculoskeletal fitness

  • Absence of serious medical disorders

Eye Examination

The RRB Section Controller Medical Test includes several ophthalmic assessments such as:

  • Distant Vision Test

  • Near Vision Test

  • Colour Vision Test

  • Binocular Vision Test

  • Night Vision Test

  • Myopic Vision Test

Candidates must successfully clear every vision parameter to be declared medically fit.

Is LASIK Allowed for RRB Section Controller?

No.

Candidates who have undergone LASIK surgery or any other refractive surgery to correct vision are not eligible for the Section Controller post.

The restriction applies to procedures such as:

  • LASIK

  • PRK

  • SMILE

  • ICL

  • Any other refractive error correction surgery

During Document Verification, candidates must submit a self-declaration in Annexure VI-B confirming that they have not undergone any refractive eye surgery.

Failure to provide the declaration or detection of corrective surgery during the medical examination may lead to disqualification.

Candidates shortlisted for the Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) must submit the prescribed Medical Vision Certificate.

Important: Candidates who fail to submit the required medical certificate at the time of the CBAT examination will not be allowed to appear for the test.

Medical Standards for Ex-Servicemen

Separate medical standards apply to Ex-Servicemen as prescribed under Para 534 of the Indian Railway Medical Manual (IRMM), Volume I.

Ex-servicemen must submit the vision certificate in the format provided under Annexure VI-A.

RRB Section Controller Medical Test Process

The RRB Section Controller Medical Test is conducted after Document Verification.

The process generally includes:

  1. Verification of medical documents.

  2. Physical fitness examination.

  3. Complete eye examination.

  4. Vision assessment as per the A-2 Medical Standard.

  5. Final medical fitness declaration by the Railway Medical Board.

Only candidates declared medically fit will proceed for final empanelment.

What Happens If You Fail the Medical Test?

According to the official notification:

  • Candidates who fail to meet the prescribed RRB Section Controller Medical Standard will not be considered suitable for empanelment.

  • No alternative post will be offered if the candidate is medically unfit for the Section Controller post.

Therefore, candidates should ensure they meet all medical requirements before applying.

Medical Appeal Rules

Candidates declared medically unfit can submit a medical appeal within the prescribed time after paying the required fee.

If the competent authority accepts the appeal:

  • The candidate will undergo an Appeal Medical Examination.

  • The decision of the Appeal Medical Board will be final and binding.

  • No further medical appeal will be entertained.

Candidates who do not file a medical appeal within the prescribed time must accept the result of the initial medical examination.

Candidates should keep the following documents ready:

  • Document Verification Call Letter

  • Identity Proof

  • Medical Vision Certificate (Annexure VI/VI-A)

  • Self-Declaration regarding LASIK/Refractive Surgery (Annexure VI-B)

  • Other documents specified in the RRB notification

Tips to Qualify the RRB Section Controller Medical Test

Before appearing for the medical examination, candidates should:

  • Get their eyesight tested by a qualified ophthalmologist.

  • Ensure their natural distant vision is 6/9 in both eyes without glasses.

  • Check their colour vision using the Ishihara Colour Vision Test.

  • Confirm they have not undergone LASIK or any refractive eye surgery.

  • Obtain the prescribed Medical Vision Certificate before the CBAT examination.

  • Review the A-2 Medical Standard mentioned in the official notification.
