NCERT Solutions for Class 7 English Honeycomb Chapter 1 Summary

The story from Class 7 English Honeycomb Chapter ‘Three Questions’ focuses on a king seeking answers to three important questions that would lead him to success. The questions were:
  • When is the right time to begin something?
  • Whose advice should he listen to?
  • What is the most important thing to do?
The king believed that if he knew the answers to these questions, he would always succeed. To find the answers, he offered a large sum of money as a reward. Wise men and counsels from across the kingdom provided various answers to the king's questions. For the first question, some advised the king to follow a timetable strictly, while others suggested being more observant and avoiding pointless pleasures. They also recommended the king seek the counsel of wise men to help him decide the right time for actions. Similarly, for the second question, people suggested that the king should listen to his advisors, the priest, and the doctor, while some also mentioned the soldiers. For the third question, some wise men emphasised the importance of science and technology, while others prioritised religion. Some chose the path of warfare. Despite their efforts, none succeeded in persuading the king, and no one received the reward. Finally, the king decided to seek counsel from a respected hermit living in the forest, believing that the hermit would enlighten him on the three questions. Disguised in plain clothes, the king walked to the hermit’s hut without his horse and bodyguards. Upon arrival, he found the hermit digging the ground. The hermit greeted him and continued digging. The king asked him the three questions and requested answers, but the hermit ignored him and kept digging. Seeing the hermit's old age and frailty, the king offered to help and joined him in digging. They worked until evening, and eventually, the king paused and once again asked for the answers to his three questions. Suddenly, both of them noticed someone running towards the hermit’s hut. The person was bleeding from the stomach and collapsed as he reached the king. The king attended to the man's large stomach wound by washing and covering it with his handkerchief. When the bleeding didn’t stop, the king dressed the wound until it stopped bleeding. They then laid him on the bed in the hermit’s hut. The next morning, the injured man asked for the king's forgiveness. He confessed that he had been following the king to kill him because the king had killed his brother and taken his property. He had been waiting for the king to return from the hermit’s place, but one of the king’s bodyguards mistook him for the enemy and attacked him. Upon hearing this, the king not only forgave the man but also promised to return his property and send his servants and doctor to care for him. The man left happily. Before leaving, the king returned to the hermit to seek his answers. He saw the hermit sowing seeds in the beds they had dug and asked him to answer his questions for the last time. The hermit replied that the king had already found his answers. The hermit explained that the most important time to act is ‘now’ because it is the only time when we have the power to act. He further said that the most important person to listen to is ‘ourselves’ because at a particular moment, no one knows what the future holds, and it is uncertain if we would meet anyone else in the future. Answering the king’s third question, the hermit said that the most important thing in one’s life should be to do good to others.
