STUDY OF GAS LAWS

SUMMARY-

  • Introduction , behavior of gas on the basis of kinetic theory.
  • Variables associated with gas-temperature , pressure &volume.
  • Boyle’s law, Charle’s law, derivation of gas equation.
  • Explanation of Boyle’s and Charle’s law on the basis of kinetic theory.
  • Standard temperature and pressure.

SECTION -1

  1. Fill in the blanks-
    1. The average kinetic energy of the molecule of a gas is proportional to the__________.
    2. The temperature on the Kelvin scale at which molecular motion completely ceases is called ___________ .
    3. If the temperature is reduced to one half, the ___________would also reduce to one half.
    4. The melting point of ice is ____________Kelvin.
  2. Give reasons for the following :
    1. All temperatures in the absolute (Kelvin) scale are in positive figure.
    2. Gases have lower densities compared to solid or liquid.
    3. Gases exert pressure in all the directions.
    4. It is necessary to specify its pressure and temperature while stating volume of a gas.
    5. Inflating a balloon seems to violate Boyle’s law.
    6. Mountaineers carry oxygen cylinder with them.

SECTION -2

  1. Explain Boyle’s law and Charle’s law on the basis of kinetic theory of matter.
  2. 10 dm 3 of oxygen is contained in a vessel at pressure of 20 atm. If another evaluated vessel of similar capacity is connected to it, calculate the pressure of gas in both the vessels.
  3. Calculate the initial pressure of 4.5 litre of dry nitrogen gas, if it occupies 3.3 litre at 1.2 atm Pressure. Assume temperature remains constant.
  4. To what temperature must a gas at 127⁰C be cooled, so that its volume is reduced to 1/5 of initial volume ?
  5. At constant pressure, a gas at -33⁰C is heated to 127⁰C. Find the percentage increase in the volume of gas.
  6. The pressure on one mole of gas at S.T.P. is doubled and the temperature is raised to 546K. What is the final volume of gas, when one mole of gas occupies 22.4 dm 3 at S.T.P. ?
  7. A gas at constant pressure occupies a volume of 300 cm 3 , at a temperature -73 o C. Find its volume at 127 o C, pressure remaining constant.
  8. The volume of a certain gas was found 561 cm 3 when pressure was 600 mm .If the pressure decreases by 25%, find the new volume of the gas.
