In 1951, Himachal Pradesh attained Part C state status and was governed by a 36-member Legislative Assembly and a Lt. Governor. The region, forged from the amalgamation of 30 former princely states, officially became the Chief Commissioner's Province of Himachal Pradesh on April 15, 1948. The inaugural Assembly elections took place in 1952, resulting in a coalition government formed by the Indian National Congress and Yashwant Singh Parmar, who secured 24 seats.
