In 1951, Himachal Pradesh attained Part C state status and was governed by a 36-member Legislative Assembly and a Lt. Governor. The region, forged from the amalgamation of 30 former princely states, officially became the Chief Commissioner's Province of Himachal Pradesh on April 15, 1948.
