The Lok Sabha is considered a temporary house. Its current effective strength is 543 seats, though the theoretical maximum is 552 (excluding PoK seats and two Anglo-Indian nominated members). A proposal suggests increasing the maximum number of seats to 850. This change is anticipated to be implemented after the 2026 census, expected around 2027. Key articles of the constitution that would be affected include Article 81 (composition of Lok Sabha), Article 82 (pertaining to the Delimitation Act), and Article 334A (dealing with the reservation of seats).
The proposed changes are outlined in the 131st Constitution Amendment Bill. The current number of Lok Sabha seats is based on the 1971 Census, implemented from 1976. The reason for the proposed increase is the significant increase in population from 1971 to 2026, necessitating greater parliamentary representation. The mechanism for this change will be through the Delimitation Act, 2002 (under Article 82), following the 2026 census. Out of the proposed 850 seats, approximately 35 seats are allocated from Union Territories (UTs), with the remaining from States.
A 33% reservation for women has been mandated in both the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies (Vidhan Sabhas). Article 334A specifically states that one-third of seats will be reserved for women. This reservation is part of the 106th Constitution Amendment Act, 2023, also known as "Nari Vandan Abhiyan". Its implementation is expected from 2026.
The Lok Sabha is a temporary house, meaning its composition can be changed. In contrast, the Rajya Sabha is a permanent house. Any increase in Rajya Sabha seats would require a separate provision and a special majority for a constitutional amendment.
The Indian Parliament comprises three key components:
President: Described under Article 52.
Rajya Sabha: Described under Article 80.
Lok Sabha: Described under Article 81.
The Parliament itself is described under Article 79.

China is developing an ambitious project: an undersea tunnel for a high-speed bullet train. This train is designed to travel at 250 km/hr over a distance of 120 km. The project is located in the Bohai Strait, which is part of the Liaodong Peninsula, and will connect the cities of Dalian and Yantai. This is expected to be the longest undersea tunnel for a bullet train globally, drastically reducing an 8-hour journey to 40-60 minutes.
An existing example of an undersea tunnel is the one connecting UK and France, approximately 50 km long. India is also working on a bullet train project, connecting Gujarat to Maharashtra, with the help of Japan. The Namo Train is currently the fastest train in India. Upcoming stations for the bullet train include Surat and Mumbai.
Regarding general tunnels, the Jawahar Tunnel and Zoji La Tunnel (both in Jammu & Kashmir) are among the longest in India.
China is undertaking significant development in Kashgar in the Xinjiang Region. This area holds geopolitical importance as it serves as a junction point for four countries: India (specifically, the disputed PoK area), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan. China is developing a large, regulated settlement here, a region notably populated by the Uyghur Muslim population.
India has concerns because this development is occurring near the disputed PoK area (near Ladakh) without India's consent, which is considered an unlawful action. There is a potential threat that this development could compromise India's monitoring capabilities, possibly facilitating the infiltration of militants or terrorists into India.
