Global Geopolitical Developments & Strategic Responses

Recent global events highlight escalating geopolitical tensions and strategic responses. The US-Israel-Iran conflict continues to intensify, raising concerns about the Strait of Hormuz being blocked and potential increases in petroleum and diesel prices.

In a significant incident, the Iranian ship IRIS Dena, which had participated in India's MILAN exercise, was reportedly attacked by the USA near Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, resulting in over 80 fatalities. This marks the first time since the World Wars an international vessel has been attacked in international waters under such circumstances.

In response, India launched Operation Sankalp, deploying naval ships to the Indian Ocean to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, acting on existing agreements rather than direct conflict involvement.

Meanwhile, Iran has deployed its Fattah missile, a hypersonic missile capable of speeds exceeding 5 Mach (with estimates up to 15 Mach). Developed in 2023 with a range of 1400 km, this missile can penetrate existing air defense systems, as no current system is known to stop it. Additionally, Iran is conducting nuclear tests, causing seismic activity in surrounding regions.

World Trade Organization (WTO) 14th Ministerial Conference

The 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is scheduled for March 26-27, 2026, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Cameroon, an African nation, will host this significant event.

The WTO, formerly known as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), was established in 1995 following the Marrakesh Treaty (1994), with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Ministerial Conference is the largest decision-making body of the WTO and convenes biennially. The 14th conference will see participation from 166 member countries. Key discussion topics will include food security and the regulation of food subsidies provided by countries.

This aims to address concerns about fair international trade, particularly from nations feeling disadvantaged by others' domestic subsidies. India will participate, presenting its proposal on regulating food subsidies to benefit its fishermen and promote domestic produce. The 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) was held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in 2024.

Bihar Political Developments: Nitish Kumar's Transition

Nitish Kumar, who first became Chief Minister of Bihar in 2000 for a brief 7-day period and has served continuously since 2005, has been appointed CM for the 10th time, making him the longest-serving CM of Bihar.

His party, Janata Dal (United), allied with BJP in 2015. Nitish Kumar is now transitioning from his Chief Ministerial post to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha, filling vacant seats from Bihar.

The Rajya Sabha is a permanent body of the Indian Parliament, with its composition governed by Article 80 of the Indian Constitution. Members for the Rajya Sabha are elected by Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

India's Parliament consists of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and the President. Samrat Chaudhary, the existing Deputy CM, is being considered as a potential new Chief Minister, with Nishant Kumar mentioned as a new Deputy CM.

Saksham Skill Survey in Maharashtra & India's Census

The Saksham Skill Survey has been inaugurated in Mumbai, hosted at R.D. National College, with the purpose of creating a "skill census" for Maharashtra's youth. This survey aims to facilitate job placement based on identified skills for individuals aged 18 to 40 years.

Notably, it is an AI-based survey, marking a departure from traditional methods and representing the first time in India such a comprehensive skill data collection is being conducted.

The survey's theme is "Saksham Yuva, Saksham Rajya" (Capable Youth, Capable State). In other national data collection news, India's census, traditionally conducted every 10 years, is anticipated to be held in 2026-27, with initial phases beginning in October 2026 in the hilly areas of Jammu & Kashmir.

Ancient Discoveries: Oldest Rock Art (Indonesia) & Horse DNA (Germany)

Significant archaeological finds include the world's oldest rock art, discovered in a Limestone cave on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. This art, featuring hand stencils and other pictures, is approximately 67,800 years old.

Indonesia's capital, formerly Jakarta, is currently relocating to East Kalimantan due to Jakarta's sinking. Separately, the oldest horse DNA has been discovered in Germany, dating back 300,000 years.

Project Hanumaan in Andhra Pradesh

Project Hanumaan has been launched in Andhra Pradesh to address human-animal conflict, which adversely impacts both humans and animals. Initiated by Pawan Kalyan, the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, the project includes measures such as strengthening tracking systems, establishing separate routes for animals and vehicles to prevent collisions, maintaining ecological balance, developing policies for eco-tourism, and conserving endangered species.

Elephants are particularly affected by human-animal conflict in Andhra Pradesh. Pawan Kalyan is also recognized for his proficiency in the martial art Takeda Shingen, being the first Indian to receive recognition for this Japanese martial art.

Discovery of Beaches on Mars

China's Zhurong Rover, part of the Tianwen-1 mission launched in 2020 and landed on Mars in 2021, has detected evidence of beaches and dried rivers on the Martian atmosphere. Its radar system was crucial in this discovery.

Otopya, a region on Mars, is considered the oldest surface in the entire solar system, estimated to be 3.5 billion years old. India also has its own Mars mission, the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM).

Echinus Geyser and Yellowstone National Park

The Echinus Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, USA, has recently erupted, six years after its last eruption. Yellowstone is a hot spot famous for its numerous geysers.

A geyser is a natural vent in the Earth's surface that periodically ejects a column of hot water and steam, a completely natural phenomenon. The water ejected from Echinus Geyser reaches approximately 200° Fahrenheit.

Chess Grandmasters: Arav Dengla

Arav Dengla, from Mumbai, has achieved the title of India's 93rd Grandmaster in Chess. Prior to this, Aryan from Delhi became the 92nd Grandmaster. India's first Grandmaster, Viswanathan Anand, currently serves as the Vice President of FIDE, the international chess federation.
