Tiger Reserves in India: In April 1973, the Bengal Tiger was designated as the National animal of India, replacing the Lion, as part of the Project Tiger initiative aimed at conserving endangered species. This move was prompted by the tiger's endangered status acc. to IUCN Red Data Book.
To address the conservation efforts, India established the Tiger Reserves in 1973, recognizing the urgent need to protect these majestic creatures. Presently, there are 54 tiger reserves in India.These reserves are managed under Project Tiger and overseen by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), through Project Tiger, oversees 54 tiger reserves in India, which is home to 80% of the world's tiger population. The tiger count in India has shown a steady increase over the years, with 1,411 tigers in 2006, 1,706 in 2010, 2,226 in 2014, and 2,967 in 2018. Under subsection (1) of section 38V of the Wild Life Protection Act of 1972, tiger reserves are established by state governments based on recommendations from the NTCA. 54th Tiger Reserve Veerangana Durgavati
Known as the "tiger state" of India- Madhya Pradesh, has added a new protected area for big cats called the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve. This reserve, established by the state government, is the 7th tiger reserve in MP and the 54th in India. Compared to the 2018 tiger census which recorded 526 big cats in Madhya Pradesh, the state now have 785 tigers, maintaining its status as the top tiger habitat in the nation.
