How To Prepare Vocab For SSC MTS?
English as a language is an endless subject, but from the SSC MTS exam point of view, it is important to know how to prepare for each of the subtopics mentioned above under the vocabulary topic.
Synonyms and Antonyms
Familiar words of the given word are called synonyms, whereas words with opposite meanings are called antonyms.
- Practice non-similar words daily and use them in sentences to get their contextual meaning.
- Don’t just remember the words; focus on the tone as well. Synonyms and antonyms can be identified easily by analyzing the tone of the word.
- Use some tricks, such as relating the word's meaning to your native or local language.
Idioms & Phrases
Some phrases in English have a fixed meaning that is not similar to their literal meaning. These kinds of phrases are used because of their figurative meaning in related situations and are grouped under Idioms & Phrases.
- As idioms and phrases are highly contextual, try to learn them with their usage.
- Use images to retain the meaning in your mind. Our minds retain more of what we see compared to what we read. This is why we remember an entire movie story but fail to understand the plot if we read its script.
One Word Substitution
Expressing more in fewer words is no less than an art in literature, but here in the SSC MTS exam, this skill is also tested. Around 2-3, questions are asked from the one-word substitution topic in the SSC MTS Exam English Language Vocabulary.
- Getting better at one-word substitution is not that hard.
- When you are covering your antonym and synonym topics, some part of this topic is already covered.
Cloze Test
In the examination, you will be given a passage with some missing words in it. You need to identify the context and select the correct word from the given choices. If you have a stronghold on vocabulary, these types of questions can fetch more marks in very little time.
- Read the passage once and understand the context and tone.
- Now read the sentence with the missing word again and fill in the blanks with words that you think suit the situation.
- If you face a dilemma, use the elimination method to find the most appropriate answer.
