IELTS Essay

Some people believe that in order for a hobby to be enjoyable, it needs to be difficult. Do you agree or disagree?

People often say that a hobby must challenge, push, and frustrate you for it to be ultimately enjoyable. But is difficulty really the main component that makes a hobby satisfying? Or can simple activities bring the same happiness? The talks around this dilemma have grown stronger in the present times, as people nowadays are exploring hobbies for skill-building and relaxation. The is an important question which invites a deeper analysis.

I disagree with the idea that a hobby must be difficult to be enjoyable. A challenging hobby can be exciting, but simple hobbies can also be as satisfying. Enjoyment depends on the person, not the difficulty level. Some people love a challenge. Others want peace. However, several others want a mix of both, depending on their mood or stage in life.

People choose hobbies to escape stress. Life today is demanding, and work is intense. Studies are endless, whereas responsibilities never stop. In such a world, several people turn to hobbies as a way to recharge. For them, relaxation matters more than challenge. A simple hobby can include something like colouring, gardening, listening to music, or watching birds can be calming. These hobbies are easy as well as healing. Healing itself is a form of happiness. Some might say these hobbies lack excitement. But who said excitement is the only measure of happiness?

Sometimes, the smallest of activities can cause the biggest satisfaction. Such activities may include little technical difficulty. However, they offer emotional comfort. They slow down the mind and remind people of their familiar daily routines. They create a sense of safety in a fast-moving world. Why should difficulty be necessary for joy when joy itself is such a flexible experience?

Some of the challenging hobbies have their own level of satisfaction. Several people enjoy pushing their limits. They find happiness in learning, improving, and achieving. Activities such as playing the violin, mastering a new language, rock climbing, or learning to code all offer a sense of progress. Progress is motivating, and it feels good to overcome challenges. For people who like growth, difficult hobbies are enjoyable because they bring a sense of victory.

But that does not mean that only difficult hobbies can be enjoyed. It proves that enjoyment is different for different people. A marathon runner might love the challenge of distance and endurance. But another person might find the same happiness in painting simple flowers. Both are hobbies that bring pleasure, and both are valid expressions of personal happiness.

One important thing that several people ignore is that difficulty itself is subjective. What is difficult for one person might be easy for another. Learning chess may be hard for some, but simple for others. So if difficulty varies from person to person, how can it be a universal requirement for enjoyment?

The idea that hobbies must be difficult can create unnecessary pressure. A hobby should feel like freedom, not obligation. If someone is told that enjoyable hobbies must be challenging, they may feel guilty for liking simple activities. They may force themselves to choose difficult hobbies even when they do not enjoy them. This defeats the purpose of having a hobby. A hobby should be natural and should feel personal. It should bring joy in its own way that does not need to be justified.

Another perspective to consider is mental health. Several people use hobbies to deal with anxiety, depression, loneliness, or emotional exhaustion on their own. For them, difficult hobbies may feel overwhelming. They require focus, discipline, and persistence. These are the qualities that may be hard to access during mental struggle. Whereas simple hobbies can offer comfort without pressure. They can create small pockets of peace in the middle of chaos. They can help people reconnect with themselves gently. In such cases, difficulty reduces enjoyment rather than increases it.

But let us be fair, difficulty does add a special kind of pleasure. It creates a story, a journey with milestones. Several people find joy in effort because it gives life meaning. Difficult hobbies encourage discipline, patience, and resilience and help people evolve. They shape identity, create pride and become a genuine form of enjoyment.

Some researchers say that human happiness comes from two sources, i.e, pleasure and meaning. Simple hobbies give pleasure, whereas difficult hobbies give meaning. And a balanced life needs both. They complement each other. A person may enjoy a complex hobby like woodworking on weekends but choose a simple hobby like listening to music on weekdays. This does not make one hobby superior. It simply reflects human variety.

This leads us to question “Does the hobby fit the person’s needs?” When people choose hobbies that match their personality, energy level, and emotional state, they enjoy them more. A hobby becomes enjoyable when it aligns with who a person is.

Let us also remember that hobbies often change over time. A teenager may enjoy fast, challenging activities like dance routines or competitive video games. However, an adult with a tiring job may prefer simple hobbies like cooking or reading. A retired person may enjoy gardening because it provides calm and routine. They show that enjoyment is dynamic. And dynamic enjoyment cannot be tied to difficulty.

To say that a hobby must be difficult to be enjoyable is not only incorrect but also limiting. It ignores personal preference and emotional health. It ignores the individuality and the deeper truth that human happiness comes in many shapes.

To sum up, I disagree with the idea that difficulty is necessary for a hobby to be enjoyable. People find joy in different things. Some want a challenge, whereas some want rest. And some want both at different times. Should we judge one form of happiness as better than another? Should enjoyment be measured by effort alone?
A hobby, difficult or easy, becomes enjoyable when it brings comfort, meaning, and personal satisfaction. Ultimately, this is what matters most.
