  • Total questions: 40

  • Total time: 60 minutes

  • Each passage has around 13–14 questions

There are two types of IELTS tests:

The reading format is almost the same in both types. The main difference is the type of passages.

Difficulty Level of IELTS Passages

In the IELTS Reading section, all three passages are not the same in difficulty.

  • Good for building confidence

Passage 2 – Medium

  • Questions need more thinking

Passage 3 – Difficult

  • Long and abstract ideas

  • Tricky language and paraphrasing

  • Many students lose marks here

Important IELTS Reading Tips for Beginners

Preparing for IELTS Reading can be challenging for beginners. The right strategies and careful practice can make a big difference in your score.

1. Follow Word Limits

Always read the instructions for sentence completion. If the task says "No more than two words," writing three words will make your answer wrong. Even if the information is correct, you will get zero marks.

2. Don't Read Everything

The test is designed to see if you can find information quickly. Do not waste time trying to understand every single sentence. Read the questions first. Then, look for the answers in the text.

3. Check Your Grammar

In completion questions, your answer must fit the sentence grammatically. If the sentence requires a noun but you write a verb, it is incorrect. Always re-read the full sentence with your answer.

4. Manage Your Time

Spend about 20 minutes on each passage. If a question is too hard, skip it and move on. You can come back to it at the end if you have time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many beginners make these mistakes:

  • Reading every word slowly

  • Ignoring word limits

  • Focusing only on keywords

  • Missing paraphrased answers

  • Not checking grammar

Avoid these to improve your score.

IELTS Reading Passage - Time Management Tips
