"Some people believe that in the near future there will be no borders between countries, while others feel that national borders will always remain. Discuss both views and give your own opinion."

Some people think globalization will erase borders between nations, creating one global community. Others believe borders are essential for protecting security, identity, and culture. While global cooperation may increase, national borders will likely remain, though they may become less rigid in the future.

The Future of Borders: Will Countries Go Borderless?

In the 21 st century, more and more people are bound to raise a question: do we still need the borders between states and countries? Globalization, joint work, cutting-edge technology, international organizations, cultural interchangeability – these words are closer to a utopian vision for some. Can we say goodbye to the state boundary? Can we live in a world without the constraints of national borders? A person will be free to move from point A to point B at any time without any documental limitations. This change will promote equality, peace, and unity in the world. Nevertheless, there is another idea that the country’s national border will never cease to exist. This fact is supported by such reasons as security, political conditions, and cultural identity. In this essay, both viewpoints will be discussed before sharing the personal opinion on the matter.

On the one hand, there is a strong and frequent assertion that, in the future, the border will no longer be significant. In the times of globalization and digitalization, nations are getting more and more connected. Businesses, education, and travel systems have become truly international, and for people, it is a part of life. Just look at a high-tech company’s work process, like Google or Microsoft, and you will understand what is meant. There, dozens of people from different countries collaborate online, create programs, and solve problems. There is no feeling of distance or place in such situations. All these facts help us feel more united and encourage the assumption that there will be no borders in the future. Those who have such a vision think that the whole planet will become a space for equal rights, equality of opportunity. The borders must be shut down because they form poverty, violence, conflict, and nationalism. This is just a political, not a natural phenomenon.

Another argument that confirms the vision of the world without a border is popular international organizations and regional unions. For example, the EU alliance officially canceled the border and checkpoints between members. Citizens may travel, work, and reside anywhere in the Union with no barriers and formalities. The concept works well, creating stable interrelations, and can show the quality of the joint government. In this case, borders are replaced by cooperation and financial support. In addition, many critical problems in the 21 st century, such as pollution, viruses, terrorism, climate change, are global issues. It means that states must unite their forces to stop it, not to protect a particular part of the planet. In such cases, national divisions become less efficient, leading to a one-world philosophy.

On the other hand, there are many arguments for a vision that the border between nations will never disappear because it is required for a variety of reasons. One of the reasons why a country’s borders will never cease to exist is government and security. Borders are a sign that shows where one state ends, and another begins. They allow the government to ensure order, control, and migration. For example, in the pandemic that we all faced a couple of years ago, borders were shut down. In some cases, it was done on the first level – checkpoints and crossings. In this case, one could not cross the state boundary without a valid and recognized reason. If the government did not use the border for such systems, it would have been almost impossible to control the virus. The above example only shows how the border system is an important institution.

National borders also help people to protect their cultural and historical identity. There is a strong feeling of attachment and pride in the language and literature one studies, the history of the homeland, the values, and the architecture. If there are no boundaries, it will be destroyed or changed dramatically. In this case, many people will lose part of their identity. Another argument for the vision that the border will always exist is the inequality of all states. In reality, not all countries are rich and powerful, so without borders, a massive stream of immigrants will flood from one place to another. The federal budget will not be able to pay for new housing, jobs, and schools for everyone. In such a way, inequality, inconsistency, and tensions can lead to the conflict and disappointment. The border system allows the government to regulate the nation flow and density.

In my view, there is a strong connection between two points of view, but borders will not disappear for many reasons. The future of the world may bring fewer visas for travel and more exchange systems between countries. The economy, cultural, and education resources will become truly global. However, there will be political separation. The border system may have only limitations, allowing more relaxed moving from point A to point B, but will not be entirely shut down. Human nature is to form systems and follow some rules. Therefore, national borders are an unavoidable process that helps countries protect themselves and their residents.

To conclude, the idea of a world without a border is compelling for many. On the one hand, there is a wide range of points that show that the concept is quite beneficial for the planet.

Elimination of the border will encourage equal rights, protection, peace, and new cultural, political opportunities. Nevertheless, national borders serve as a safety, resources, and historical identity regulator for all citizens. They have a significant impact on the whole country’s health and future. Although the border may seem closed in some areas, it will never shut down because states want to protect the residents and stay independent. This fact is supported by such reasons as security, cultural conditions, and political infrastructure. In the future, a balance between globalism and closedness will shape how the world will work in the next decades.
