IELTS Social Essay

Playing Computer Games only has Negative Effects on Children. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Playing video games has now turned into a normal part of life for many children. Though some adults may feel that these games bring only harmful consequences, this essay argues that the use of computer games may cause serious problems; still, it also can bring positive benefits if taken in moderation and guided accordingly. Many children, juveniles, and adolescents spend a lot of time playing video games and doing online gaming. They use different forms of digital entertainment and interactive media every day. Some people strongly agree that these activities have only detrimental effects, while others disagree by showing both advantages and disadvantages. This essay takes a balanced perspective and explains to what extent the negative impact may outweigh the benefits for the youth. Below compares key disadvantages and advantages of video games for children, where disadvantages include sedentary lifestyle, obesity, eye strain, aggressive behaviour, anxiety, addiction, social isolation, and declining academic performance, while benefits include better cognitive function, problem-solving skills, stronger hand-eye coordination, spatial reasoning, teamwork, collaboration, and a sense of achievement.

Another evident problem can be seen in the lifestyle of many juveniles who spend long hours playing computer games; they sit in one place, barely moving around, and would rather snack than eat healthy food. This may lead to child and adolescent obesity and a compromise of physical health. The unhealthy lifestyle and poor posture are very common when juveniles hunch over screens in weird postures. Long practiced, this habit leads to back pain and other physical disadvantages. Too much screen time can cause eye strain, headaches, and even sleep deprivation because the brain stays active for far too long into the night. Children are still growing, so health-related risks matter a lot. Health-related problems brought about by gaming include: sedentary life, obesity, poor posture, back and neck pains, eye strain, headaches, sleep deprivation, tiredness, and compromised physical health.

Computer games may also affect mental and emotional health to a large extent. Violent video games can raise the level of aggression in some youth. When adolescents watch fighting and destruction again and again, they may become desensitised about the violence, thinking that it is normal. Some juveniles experience dysregulation of their emotions after long sessions of gaming. They get angry or anxious when they lose the game or when parents stop the game. Addiction to gaming or gaming disorder, in extreme cases, might appear where kids think of gaming online all the time. It is a means of running away from real-life problems through escapism.

When the youth focus only on digital entertainment, social life and schoolwork also suffer. Many children face social isolation due to spending more time with screens than with friends and family. The result is weakened face-to-face communication; they show impaired social skills. At school, neglect of responsibilities becomes a big issue. Homework, projects, and reading are boring compared to online gaming. This can cause declining academic performance and reduced attention span in class over time. Teachers may notice that adolescents cannot focus on one task for long without checking their phones or thinking about video games. Social and academic risks of playing computer games include social isolation, fewer real-life friends, impaired social skills, weak eye contact, neglect of responsibilities, declining academic performance, and reduced attention span.

Notwithstanding such dangerous influences, it would be unfair to say that computer games bring only disadvantages. Many of them improve cognitive function in young people. Puzzle and strategy games support critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Some games require strategic planning as well, sharpening mental acuity and decision-making abilities. Moreover, video games can build important physical and digital skills: fast-paced games enhance hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, as kids need to react fast and accurately; three-dimensional worlds develop spatial reasoning; and regular use of devices develops technological fluency and digital literacy, useful in modern life. Online gaming, if used wisely, can support teamwork and collaboration. In many multiplayer games, groups of children have to work together to reach their goal. This can stimulate adolescents to develop high levels of communication, as they share ideas, make plans, and solve problems. Some young people are even building resilience and perseverance in trying to tackle difficult levels in a game. Children learn to try again after previous failures and feel a really strong sense of achievement once they get to where they want to be. All these positive emotions can balance the negative impact, to some extent, provided that the time spent gaming remains under control. It is not true to claim that playing computer games only exerts negative effects on children. The adverse effects are real and severe, especially when there is no limit or supervision. Health problems, emotional drawbacks, and school problems outweigh the benefits when gaming hours become very high. Once parents and teachers guide the youth, set clear rules, and choose suitable content, the adverse consequences can be reduced. Without excess, the benefits in cognitive functionality, social skills, and digital literacy can grow without inflicting much damage. This way, to a certain extent, the negative impact is very strong, but it does not completely cancel out the possible benefits.
