Who Can Apply for UGC NET December 2026?

Before filling out the application form, candidates should check the eligibility criteria prescribed by NTA.

For the December 2026 session:

  • General/Unreserved and General-EWS candidates must have at least 55% marks in a Master's degree or equivalent examination from a recognised university/institution.

  • OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and Third Gender candidates must have at least 50% marks in the Master's degree or equivalent examination.

  • Candidates pursuing their Master's degree or those who have appeared in the final-year examination and are awaiting results can also apply, subject to the conditions specified by NTA.

  • Candidates who have completed or are pursuing a four-year/eight-semester Bachelor's degree can also apply subject to the prescribed eligibility conditions.

  • There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for Assistant Professor or PhD admission through UGC NET.

  • For JRF, the upper age limit is 30 years as on December 1, 2026, with applicable relaxations for eligible categories.

UGC NET December 2026 Photograph Requirements

One important change candidates should note while filling the application form is the requirement for a live photograph.

Candidates must use the camera or webcam on the device being used to complete the application. If the device does not have a webcam, NTA provides an option to scan the QR code and use a mobile device or tablet for capturing the live photograph.

Candidates should ensure:

  • Proper lighting

  • Light-coloured background

  • 80% face visibility

  • Ears should be visible

  • No mask

  • The photograph should belong to the candidate

The recent scanned photograph uploaded separately should also meet the file-size and image requirements prescribed by NTA.

If the transaction has not been successfully completed, candidates may need to make the payment again and ensure that the fee status is shown as successful. Candidates should not assume that the application has been successfully submitted merely because the payment amount has been deducted.

UGC NET December 2026 Exam Date

The UGC NET December 2026 examination will be conducted from December 14 to December 19, 2026 in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The examination will be conducted for 87 subjects. The test will consist of two sections:
