National Nutrition Week 2025 Overview

The National Nutrition Week 2025 will be celebrated in India between September 1 to September 7, 2025. Events and exhibitions during this week on nutritional awareness and education are organized by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and Women and Child Development.

  • This week focuses on doing activities in a protective way, including eating a balanced diet, following good food habits, mindful eating, and the prevention of malnutrition and lifestyle-related diseases.

  • Celebrations of National Nutrition Week at the school and college level involve events like Healthy Tiffin Days, poster competitions, speeches, nutrition workshops, and recipe demonstrations.

  • This initiative by the government also supports flagship government schemes, including the likes of Poshan Abhiyan and the Mid-day Meal Scheme.

National Nutrition Week 2025 History

The idea for celebrating a Nutrition Week was developed in Western countries and was introduced by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The concept of dedicating a specific week to nutrition awareness was started by the Indian government in the year 1982.  Since then, the National Nutrition Week has been celebrated annually in India between September 1 to September 7.

India, even in present times, continues to face the issue of undernutrition and malnutrition among children and lactating mothers. Micronutrient deficiencies like Anemia and chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, are also prevalent. Thus, the celebration of the National Nutrition Week is a reminder for all the citizens of the country to follow and maintain a balanced diet and good eating habits.

National Nutrition Week 2025 Theme

The official theme for the celebration of the National Nutrition Week by the Government in 2025 is “Eat Right, for a better life”. The theme primarily focuses on mindful eating and food habits, including being choosy about the type of food, eating more fruits and vegetables, curbing down on junk and fried food, and more.

This theme also aligns with some other Government initiatives like the Poshan Abhiyaan and the MDM Scheme. These are the initiatives through which the Indian government is trying to address the issues related to malnutrition, obesity, and other nutrient-related diseases. It is done by organizing programs for public awareness, common education, mass mobilization, etc.

Nutrition Programmes in India

The National Nutrition Week is integrated with various other flagship initiatives of the Government. These programmes are all aimed at reducing the level of malnutrition in India. The three indicators of malnutrition in children are as follows:

  • Stunting - Low Height with respect to age

  • Wasting - Low weight with respect to height

  • Underweight - Low weight with respect to age

To address these issues, the initiatives that are being run in India are provided in the table below:

This initiative focuses on the first 1000 days of a child’s life, which is considered a very important period for the development of a child. Poshan Pakhwada 2025 is a step towards building a nutritious Bharat with the main focus on women and children.

The Poshan Tracker App, developed in India, is an AI-enabled platform that keeps a record of a newly born child and the mother with real-time tracking via smartphones. It empowers the Anganwadi Workers to effectively manage attendance, growth monitoring, meal distribution, and early childhood education.

Integrated Child Development Services Scheme (ICDS)

It is a centrally sponsored scheme launched in 1975 to improve the nutritional status of children and reduce child mortality and malnutrition. It was first introduced in two projects - Dharani (Amravati) and Dharavi (Mumbai).

The scheme lays the foundation for the psychological, physical, and social development of the child. The following services are provided under the ICDS Scheme:

  • Supplementary Nutrition

  • Pre-school Education

  • Nutrition & health educationImmunization

  • Health check-up and

  • Referral services

National Nutrition Week 2025 Significance

India is increasingly facing the issues of undernutrition in children and also the mothers who are giving birth. Providing a safety net to everyone is difficult, but certain things can be done to educate and aware the masses so that they themselves can learn to avoid these issues. The significance of celebrating this week can be summarized as follows:

  • Dealing with Malnutrition: It helps to address prevalent malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, especially among women and children, by raising awareness of ongoing issues like iron deficiency anemia, vitamin A deficiency, and protein-energy malnutrition.

  • Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases: Nowadays, our lifestyle and eating habits have become an important causative agent for various diseases. The theme "Eat Right for a Better Life" specifically encourages mindful eating and reducing processed foods to mitigate these risks.

  • Helping with other Government Initiatives: It strengthens and aligns with national initiatives like the POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission) and the Mid-Day Meal Scheme by mobilizing community participation and public awareness.

  • Aligning with SDG Goals: The celebration of the National Nutrition Week supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 2, which aims to achieve "Zero Hunger" by 2030.
