Preparing for a government exam can become difficult when a candidate attempts multiple examinations without a clear direction. Gaurav also went through this phase after completing his BTech and appearing for several examinations.
His journey changed when he decided to focus specifically on RRB JE. He followed PW’s preparation resources, worked extensively on practice and revision, and continued his preparation despite earlier setbacks. His RRB JE Success Story explains how this focused approach shaped his preparation and eventually led to his selection.
Gaurav first completed a diploma from Ramakrishna Mission Shilpa Mandir in Howrah. He then completed BTech through lateral entry from Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata, in 2019.
After completing BTech, he appeared for several examinations, including Engineering Services, WBCS and other railway-related examinations. These attempts helped him understand that different examinations have different requirements.
Gaurav explained how this experience changed his approach:
“To main socha jo abhi mujhe sirf ekdam specific hi form bharna hai aur doosra form nahi bharna hai. Sirf main 2025 mein ek hi form bhara RRB JE bas ussi mein ho gaya aur kuch nahi.”
This decision became an important point in his preparation. Instead of dividing his attention among different examinations, he chose to focus specifically on RRB JE.
He also reflected on what he learned from his earlier attempts:
“Ek cheez main seekha us saal mein matlab ek bhi naukri mera nahi hua us saal se maine ek cheez seekha jo matlab NTPC nahi bhar raha hoon wahan pe aapka history geography polity hai uska to demand alag kuch ho raha hai.”
This helped him understand the importance of preparing according to the specific requirements of an examination.
Before focusing on RRB JE, Gaurav had appeared for several examinations. He also cleared stages of the ALP examination but did not continue with the next stage.
These experiences were difficult, but they also helped him identify what was and was not working in his preparation. His decision to focus on one examination came after seeing how preparation for different exam patterns could divide his attention.
Gaurav described his long preparation period and the challenge of dealing with repeated attempts:
“Matlab sir mera jab 2019 mein BTech complete ho gaya mid June mein tab se leke maine itna din tak mera exam diya matlab koi na koi exam dete raha.”
Despite the setbacks, he continued preparing and eventually changed his approach.
His preparation also became more disciplined when he shifted to studying at home:
“Maine socha jab main bahar tha to main bahar reh ke na zyada padhai nahi kar pa raha hoon. Matlab ghar mein bol raha hoon haan padh raha hoon. Theek hai. Padhai ho raha hai.”
Gaurav realised that studying at home suited his preparation better and helped him maintain self-discipline. He continued this routine while preparing specifically for RRB JE.
After deciding to focus on RRB JE, Gaurav used PW’s preparation resources for his studies. He took the RRB JE Mechanical batch and later followed the crash course for his preparation.
He shared how he used PW’s content during his preparation:
“Maine SSC RRB JE 2024 ka jo batch hai Mechanical ka wo liya tha. Phir crash course jo tha usko maine follow kiya tha.”
He also continued with the updated content available through PW:
“2024 mein batch liya tha, phir 2025 mein bhi maine aapka batch follow kiya, lekin aapne jo content update kiya tha usko bhi maine YouTube se grab kiya poora poori.”
Gaurav focused on following a structured source rather than collecting different study materials. He also combined the class content with his own revision and practice.
For CBT 1, Gaurav relied on his previous experience with non-technical examinations for Mathematics and Reasoning. He practised previous-year questions and used mock tests for revision and practice.
For General Studies, he prepared short notes and used keywords and mind maps to revise important information. He also kept his study material organised so that it could be revised multiple times.
Gaurav explained his approach to notes:
“Aapka jo poora class notes hai main usko padhta rehta tha. Wahan pe jo important hai usko chhota-chhota form mein likhta tha.”
This approach helped him keep important information in a form that he could revise repeatedly during his preparation.
Along with revision, Gaurav also gave importance to regular question practice. He continued solving questions and used PW strategy sessions to regain focus whenever he felt demotivated:
“Agar jab bhi demotivation aaye to PW app mein jaake us video ko click karna hai aur wahan se phir se motivation laake phir se us line mein aana hai track mein aana hai.”
This combination of revision, question practice and maintaining focus became an important part of his preparation strategy.
He described his daily preparation routine:
“Ma’am main 10 hours se 12 hours ke upar hi padhai karta tha matlab dekhiye ki mujhe ghar mein koi bhi koi kaam ke liye kabhi bhi nahi bolta tha.”
His answer-key score was 121.37, after which he expected his selection. When he finally saw his roll number marked as selected in the result, it became an emotional moment after years of seeing “no match found” while checking previous results.
Gaurav's experience offers valuable guidance for engineering candidates. Daily revision and mock analysis are vital to clear high cut-offs. Aspirants must focus on accuracy and follow a structured study plan.
He gave a clear message to aspirants:
“Agar aap exam de rahe hain to ek community ka exam dijiye koi matlab maine jo jo galti kiya aapko maine bataya bahut saara doosra category ka exam maine ek saath follow karne ka koshish kiya.”
He further explained why exam-specific preparation mattered to him:
“To ek type ka jaise Mechanical Engineering mein de rahe hain to AE JE ko hum obviously sab exam follow kar sakte hain. Syllabus ultimately 20% kuch alag hota hai. Sabka agar exam alag dekhen to aap exam specific rahiye.”
His story shows how changing the preparation approach after repeated attempts can help a candidate build a more focused study routine. His journey highlights focused preparation, repeated practice, revision and following a structured source instead of dividing attention across very different examinations.
