  • The length of the train can be found if the train crosses a platform or another train.

  • If a train crosses a stationary object like a pole, the distance covered is the length of the train.

  • If a train crosses a platform, the distance covered is the length of the train plus the length of the platform.

Problem: A train 150 meters long is moving at a speed of 54 km/hr. How long will it take to cross a pole?

Example 2: Train Crossing a Platform

Problem: A train 200 meters long is moving at a speed of 72 km/hr. It crosses a platform 100 meters long. How long will it take to cross the platform?

Solution:

  1. Convert speed to m/s: 72×5/18=20 m/s

  2. Total distance to be covered (length of train + length of platform): 

Total Distance = 200+100 = 300 meters

Example 3: Two Trains Crossing Each Other

Problem: Two trains, each 120 meters long, are moving in opposite directions at speeds of 36 km/hr and 54 km/hr. How long will they take to cross each other?

Solution:

  1. Convert speeds to m/s: 

Speed of Train 1 = 36×5/18=10 m/sec.

  Speed of Train 2 = 54×5/18=15 m/sec.

  1. Relative speed (since they are moving in opposite directions): 

Relative Speed = 10+15 = 25 m/s

  1. Total distance to be covered (sum of lengths of both trains): 

Total Distance = 120+120 = 240 meters

Example 4: Train Crossing Another Train Moving in the Same Direction

Problem: Two trains, one 150 meters long and the other 100 meters long, are moving in the same direction at speeds of 40 km/hr and 30 km/hr, respectively. How long will it take for the faster train to cross the slower train?

Solution:

1. Convert speeds to m/s: 

Speed of Train 1(faster) = 40×5/18=11.11 m/s 

Speed of Train 2(slower) = 30×5/18=8.33 m/s

2. Relative speed (since they are moving in the same direction): 

Relative Speed = 11.11−8.33 = 2.78 m/s

3. Total distance to be covered (sum of lengths of both trains): 

Total Distance = 150+100 = 250 meters
