The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) allows students to select subjects based on the prescribed scheme of studies. The CBSE Senior Secondary curriculum for Classes XI and XII is treated as a composite course. This means that the subjects selected in Class XI generally need to be continued in Class XII. You need to select at least five subjects in Class XI. An additional sixth subject can also be chosen under the prescribed scheme.

CBSE Class 12 Arts Compulsory Subjects 2027

There is no single fixed set of five Arts subjects that every student has to study. Your compulsory subject structure is based on the CBSE senior secondary scheme.

  • Language Subjects: One of the two language subjects must be Hindi or English. The second subject can be another language or an elective from the prescribed groups. Hindi and English can also be selected together if the combination meets CBSE requirements.

  • Main and Additional Subjects: You can generally select five main subjects according to the permitted combination. You may also choose a sixth subject as an additional subject if it follows the CBSE subject-selection rules.

  • Internal Assessment Subjects: Apart from the academic subjects, regular candidates are assessed in Health and Physical Education, Work Experience, and General Studies. Work Experience is included within Health and Physical Education for assessment purposes.

  • Core and Elective Restrictions: The same subject cannot be offered at both Core and Elective levels. CBSE also has restrictions on certain subject combinations.

  • Mathematics and Applied Mathematics: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics cannot be selected together. You need to choose one of these subjects if you want Mathematics as part of your subject combination.

  • Computer-Related Subjects: Among Informatics Practices, Computer Science and Information Technology, only one can be chosen. You cannot select more than one of these three subjects.

  • Business-Related Subjects: Business Studies and Business Administration cannot be taken together. You should consider your future course requirements before selecting either subject.

The Best Subject Combination for CBSE Class 12 Arts 2027 depends on your interests and future course requirements. There is no single combination that suits every student.

1. For Civil Services and Public Policy

If you are interested in civil services, political studies or public policy, you can consider History, Political Science, Geography, and Economics. These subjects help you develop knowledge of society, governance, geography and the economy.

2. For Psychology-Related Courses

If you are interested in psychology-related courses, you can consider Psychology with subjects such as Sociology, Political Science, English and Economics. Your school’s available subject options should also be considered before making the choice.

3. For Economics and Management

4. For Creative Fields

How to Choose Subjects in CBSE Class 12 Arts?

You should consider four factors while selecting your CBSE Class 12 Arts subjects.

1. Consider your interests

Choose subjects that you can study consistently for two years. Arts offers several subjects, so you can select areas that match your interests.

If you enjoy reading about historical events, History may suit you. If you are interested in government and politics, Political Science can be considered. Geography is useful if you enjoy maps, physical processes and human geography.

2. Check your career plan

Your preferred undergraduate course should influence your Class 12 subjects. For example, some economics, psychology or management courses may have specific subject requirements.

Check the eligibility rules of the courses you are considering before finalising your subjects.

3. Look at the assessment structure

Subjects have different combinations of theory, practical work and internal assessment.

History, Political Science and Sociology have 80 marks for theory and 20 marks for internal assessment. Geography, Psychology and several other subjects have 70 marks for theory and 30 marks for practical work.

Fine Arts subjects have a different structure, with 30 marks for theory and 70 marks for practical work.
