English Class 12 Board Exam Strategy

How to Score 100 in English Class 12 lies in your preparation for both the Language and Literature sections. The English section is categorized into  Reading, Writing, and Literature sections. Candidates can score 100 in English Class 12 by allotting dedicated time to each section.

Given below is the

1. Reading Comprehension (20 Marks)

  • Includes unseen passages and case-based factual understanding. The unseen passages may be based on factual, descriptive, or literary passages.
  • Within the 15 minutes of reading time, scan immediately the comprehension passages. Read the question carefully.
  • Competency-based questions involve inference. Don't lift lines verbatim. Paraphrase the answer in your own grammatically correct English, making the answer concise and to the point.
  • Vocabulary questions (synonyms/antonyms) are direct mark-scorers. Practice previous year papers to get accustomed to context-based usage of words.

2. Creative Writing Skills (20 Marks)

  • The Writing Section is where the CBSE Marking Scheme is strictest. Full marks are given only if the Format, Content, and Expression are perfect. A single mistake in format results in an instant deduction of marks.
  • Practice the format for each category of letter, notice, report, and article at least three times until you can reproduce it word for word from memory.
  • Adhere strictly to the prescribed word limits (50 words for short assignments; 120-150 words for long assignments). Overwriting above the limit incurs penalty as wastage of time and poor expression.
  • Refrain from using slang or excessively complicated, contrived language. Be grammatically correct and have logical sequencing.

3. Literature (Flamingo and Vistas - 40 Marks)

  • This is the most scoring section for students who are familiar with the texts. The focus is to break free from plot summary to critical analysis and thoughtful responses.
  • All questions will be asked from the NCERT books, Flamingo, and Vistas. Read each chapter and poem several times. Do not just depend on summaries or reference guides.
  • Prepare revision notes of all key characters (e.g., Saheb and Mukesh in Lost Spring, the Peddler in The Rattrap, Douglas in Deep Water) and the key themes (e.g., linguistic chauvinism, man-nature conflict, exploitation, redemption). They are the foundation of the long-answer type questions.
  • For poetry, memorise two or three important phrases or quotations per poem (e.g., "all she did was smile and smile and smile" from My Mother at Sixty-Six). Including a quote in your long-answer introduction or conclusion creates huge value and demonstrates extended textual engagement.

4. Answer Structure (Long Answers)

A 5-mark long answer of 120-150 words must follow a structure to get full marks.

  • Introduction: Identify the key theme and setting, perhaps with a quotation.
  • Body (2-3 paragraphs): Build on your argument with evidence and illustration from the text.
  • Conclusion: Summarize the important points and connect them to a general reference.

Literature (Flamingo & Vistas)

1. The Last Lesson / Lost Spring (Competency-Based):

The fate of the oppressed, whether by imposition of a language (as in The Last Lesson) or imposition of poverty (as in Lost Spring), results in loss of identity and hope. Consider this contention by juxtaposing the quiet sadness of Alsace villagers with the relentless despair of Seemapuri ragpickers.

2. The Rattrap / Deep Water (Analytical Long Answer):

Both William Douglas and the Peddler are victims of entrenched emotional suffering—fear and loneliness, respectively. Discuss how one act of true kindness, respect, or acceptance changes their lives so that they can break through their own "rattrap" or their "terror."

3. My Mother at Sixty-Six / Keeping Quiet (Poetic Appreciation):

Compare how the poets employ contrasting imagery (e.g., young trees/pale mother in My Mother at Sixty-Six; life/death in Keeping Quiet) to develop the themes of loss and introspection. What particular message regarding life and human action do each poet offer?

4. The Enemy / On the Face of It (Value-Based Question):

Dr. Sadao and Mr. Lamb are individuals who go against what society expects to live a higher moral standard—humanity during war, and acceptance during prejudice. Explain why individual conscience and sympathy are more important than mass prejudice, using examples from both tales.

Creative Writing Skills (Application of Format and Content)

5. Article/Report Writing (Current Affairs/Social Issue):

Write an Article for your school magazine, to be answered in approximately 120-150 words, on the topic: "Digital Detox: The Necessity of Unplugging for Mental Well-being." (Focus on: Logical structure, flow of ideas, strong introduction, and conclusion.)
