NTA to Focus Solely on Entrance Exams from 2025

NTA to Focus Solely on Entrance Exams from 2025: The National Testing Agency (NTA) will no longer conduct any recruitment exams starting from 2025. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan made this significant announcement, emphasizing that the NTA will now focus exclusively on conducting higher education entrance exams. This decision is a part of broader examination reforms recommended by a high-level panel earlier this year, following concerns over the alleged leak of the NEET medical entrance exam and a series of cancellations and technical glitches in other exams.

Transition to Focus on Higher Education Entrance Exams

Starting next year, the NTA will be limited to conducting only entrance exams for higher education. This change aims to streamline the examination process, ensuring it is more efficient and error-free. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan explained that this decision was driven by the need to address persistent issues such as exam leaks and technical glitches that have affected previous tests. By focusing solely on entrance exams, the NTA can provide more specialized and rigorous oversight, reducing the chances of discrepancies and errors. This move is intended to restore public trust in the examination process and ensure a fair and transparent experience for all candidates.

NEET-UG Mode of Examination

One of the major discussions between the education and health ministries revolves around whether the medical entrance exam, NEET-UG, should continue in the traditional pen-and-paper format or switch to an online mode. Pradhan highlighted that both ministries are closely working together to determine the best approach for conducting the exam efficiently and without errors. The detailed plan for NEET-UG is expected to be announced within the next 2-3 weeks. The government aims to make a well-informed decision that minimizes the risk of examination irregularities and provides a consistent experience for all candidates.

Restructuring of the NTA for Error-Free Testing

In 2025, the NTA will undergo significant changes with a major restructuring. At least ten new positions will be created to support these changes. This restructuring will involve a complete review of the NTA’s functions to ensure there are no errors in testing. Pradhan mentioned that these changes are needed to strengthen the agency’s ability to conduct exams without mistakes. The restructuring will also include improved training for NTA staff to handle their new responsibilities effectively.

CUET-UG to Continue Annually

Pradhan confirmed that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) will continue to be held once a year. The NTA will adopt recommendations from the Radhakrishnan-led panel to ensure a "smooth and fair" conduct of exams. This includes securing the storage of question papers and utilizing government educational institutions where the sanctity of the exam can be maintained. The NTA will also establish a robust Grievance Reporting and Redressal Cell to address student concerns, in line with the Supreme Court’s directive on student wellness and exam de-stressing.

Recommendations and Future Plans for NTA

The Radhakrishnan-led panel, formed after the NEET-UG exam paper leak in June, found that the NTA was trying to do too much by handling multiple requests from various test-indenting agencies. The panel recommended that the NTA should focus mainly on conducting entrance exams. To strengthen its role, it suggested expanding the NTA’s capacity to take on other types of exams in the future. Union Minister Pradhan noted that steps are being taken to restructure the NTA next year, including creating new posts to better manage its responsibilities. By narrowing its focus, the NTA aims to improve the quality of its services, make the exam process smoother, reduce errors, and ensure fair assessments for all candidates. This restructuring will help the NTA become more efficient and consistent in conducting exams, providing a better experience for students.
