CUET 2025 Remove Negative Marking

CUET 2025 Remove Negative Marking : CUET UG 2025 exam is going through several changes. UGC has made several changes to the exam such as its mode of conducting, number of subjects, exam pattern, etc. One topic that has become a hot issue among students is negative marking. As the University Grants Commission (UGC) prepares to introduce a new exam pattern, many students are sharing their thoughts on whether negative markings should stay or go.

CUET 2025 Changes Overview

The UGC has announced several updates to make CUET better. Key changes include:
  • Fewer Subjects: The number of cuet subjects has been reduced from 63 to 37, removing 20 foreign languages and six domain subjects.
  • Mandatory Questions: All candidates must now answer all 50 questions in each paper, rather than choosing from a larger set like before.
  • Same Time Limit: Each subject will have the same time limit of 60 minutes to complete.
Despite these changes, the issue of negative marking remains a point of concern. Candidates will still lose marks for wrong answers, with each correct answer earning five marks and each incorrect answer deducting one mark.

CUET 2025 Remove Negative Marking : Students Views on Negative Marking

Given these updates, many students are calling for the removal of negative marking. Their main arguments are:
  • Students feel that having to answer every question adds extra stress. They argue that if they must attempt all questions, it is unfair to penalize them for wrong answers. One student expressed, "If they are making all the questions compulsory, negative marking should be removed."
  • Discouraging Attempts: Critics say that negative marking makes students hesitant to answer questions they are unsure about. This could lead to an incomplete picture of their knowledge and skills. Instead of encouraging thoughtful answers, it might make students guess out of fear of losing marks.
  • A student said "If they have made some modifications, there are a few benefits. If someone has History, Geography, and Political Science as their subjects, they can have Psychology and Economics as well...If they are making all the questions compulsory, negative marking should be removed."

CUET Marking Scheme 2025

Candidates who wish to apply for admission to CUET UG exam must go through CUET Marking Scheme 2025 before starting the preparation for the exam.
  • Correct answer or the most appropriate answer: Five marks (+5)
  • Any incorrect option marked will be given minus one mark (-1).
  • Unanswered/Marked for Review will be given no mark (0).
  • If more than one option is found to be correct then Five marks (+5) will be awarded to only those who have marked any of the correct options.
  • If all options are found to be correct then Five marks (+5) will be awarded to all those who have attempted the question.
  • If none of the options is found correct or a question is found to be wrong or a question is dropped, then all candidates who have attempted the dropped question will be given five marks (+5) marks.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Removing Negative Marking
Advantages of Removing Negative Marking Disadvantages of Removing Negative Marking
Less Exam Stress: Students may feel less anxious without worrying about losing marks for wrong answers. Less Accurate Assessment: Without negative marking, students might not try as hard to answer correctly, making it harder to see their true knowledge.
More Attempts at Questions: Students are likely to try all questions, giving a better view of what they know. Guessing Might Increase: Candidates could guess answers more often, which might lead to higher scores that don’t reflect real understanding.
Encourages Learning from Mistakes: Students can learn from wrong answers without fear of losing points, creating a better learning environment. Unfair to Prepared Students: Those who study hard might feel it’s unfair if others get good scores just by guessing.
Fairer Evaluation: Removing penalties allows for a more equal way to judge what students know and can do. Possible Lower Standards: Without negative marking, some students might score higher without actually knowing the material well.
More Students Taking the Exam: More candidates might decide to take the exam if they know they won’t lose marks for wrong answers, leading to a wider range of applicants. Harder to Differentiate Candidates: It may be more difficult for universities to tell apart candidates based on scores alone, which could affect admission choices.
