Indian Army Rehearses 21-Gun Salute Ahead Of Independence Day: As preparations for Independence Day intensify in the national capital, Indian Army personnel conducted a rehearsal of the 21-gun salute at the historic Red Fort on Friday. Every year on Independence Day, the 21-gun salute ceremony is performed as a significant part of the celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi. Let's read about it more through this article.

What is 21-Gun Salute Ceremony?

The 21-Gun Salute Ceremony is a traditional military honor that involves the firing of 21 artillery rounds in a synchronized manner. It is typically used to mark significant national events, such as Independence Day, state funerals, or to honor visiting dignitaries. The 21-Gun Salute is the highest honor that can be rendered and symbolizes respect, reverence, and remembrance of important figures, events, or occasions in a nation's history. In India, this salute is notably performed during Independence Day celebrations as a tribute to the sacrifices of those who fought for the country's freedom. The tradition of the 21-gun salute has its origins in colonial India, where British naval forces would order an enemy to fire ammunition to demonstrate that their weapons were unloaded. Over time, this practice evolved into a ceremonial gesture of peace. The 21-gun salute eventually became one of the highest national honors. Historically, before independence, different cannon salutes, such as 19 and 17 guns, were used to show respect to monarchs and leaders of princely states. Today, the 21-gun salute serves as a symbol of India's sovereignty and national pride.

Major Sabnis remarked, "Providing a 21-gun salute on Independence Day is a surreal experience and a matter of pride for the entire ceremonial battery. This ceremony is not just about military precision; it's a tribute to the pride we feel and a remembrance of the sacrifices of our forefathers. For this ceremony, we have utilized seven light field guns." He further elaborated on the equipment used, stating, "The light field gun employed for the salute was developed by the Indian Ordnance Factory in 1982 and is approximately 1,000 kg lighter than the standard Indian field gun. The 21-gun salute is part of three synchronized activities on Independence Day, including the unfurling of the flag by the Prime Minister, the playing of the national anthem by the Indian Condition Band, and the firing of the 21-gun salute. We complete the 21-round gun salute in 52 seconds."
