International Students Day

International Students Day is a special day to celebrate students from different countries. Being an international student far from home is tough, and it takes a lot of bravery. These students come a long way to get an education and make a better life for their families. University life is hard for all students, but it's even tougher for those from other countries. They face extra challenges and have to solve problems on their own.

On International Students Day, we honor and support these students in their struggles. Let's celebrate their hard work and cheer them on to reach their goals. Remember, International Students Day in 2023 is on Friday, November 17. Take a moment to recognize and encourage international students as they work towards a secure future.

What is International Students Day?

International Students Day is a day celebrated worldwide by students, every year on November 17th. It started to remember students in Czech universities who faced tough times during World War II. Now, many universities observe this day, although it might not always be on November 17th. They celebrate the diverse backgrounds of their international students in a non-political way.

In Czechia and Slovakia, it's a public holiday.

International Students Day 2023 Theme

The theme for International Students Day 2023 is "Learning Beyond Borders: A Global Perspective." This theme is about how it's essential for students from various countries to learn together. It highlights how studying in different countries helps us know more about the world. The theme also says we should make school campuses friendly and welcoming for students from different parts of the world.

International Students Day History

International Students Day is a day to remember and celebrate men around the world. The day was first started to honor students in Czech universities who faced tough times during World War II. The students were fighting against the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, and sadly, some were killed. The Nazis closed down Czech universities, and the students faced many challenges.

The idea to remember these events and honor students came from Czechoslovak Army troops in England in 1940. They wanted to renew the Central Association of Czechoslovak Students, which had been disbanded by the German Protectorate in Czechoslovakia. With support from Edvard Beneš, the President-in-Exile of Czechoslovakia, the association was reestablished in London on November 17, 1940.

Efforts were made to convince students from different nations to acknowledge November 17 as a day to commemorate and resist the Nazis. Fourteen countries, including Czechoslovakia, France, the UK, the USSR, and others, agreed and signed a proclamation. They proclaimed November 17 as International Students' Day.

The inaugural meeting was held in London's Caxton Hall on November 16, 1941, with support from President Beneš. The proclamation was read and accepted by attendees from various governments in exile. On November 17, 1941, members of the association had a meeting with President Beneš. Meetings like these continued annually on November 17 throughout World War II.

International Students Day is a day to recognize students contributions and challenges. It started to honor students who stood against oppression and occupation, and it has grown to celebrate men's achievements and the fight for freedom and democracy around the world.

International Students Day Importance

International Students Day is important for several reasons:

  1. Remembering Sacrifices: It's a day to remember the hard times students faced in history, especially during the Nazi attack on the University of Prague in 1939. Even though it was a sad event, it shows how students can be strong and determined to fight for what's right.
  2. Celebrating Contributions: This day is all about celebrating what international students bring to the world. They share different knowledge, experiences, and ideas with everyone at their schools, making learning more interesting.
  3. Embracing Diversity: International Students Day shows how students from all over the world bring their own cultures and ideas when they study in different countries. This makes education better for everyone and helps create a more connected and aware world.
  4. Promoting Equal Access to Education: This day reminds us that everyone, no matter where they're from, should have the same chance to get a good education. Education is something everyone should have the right to, and this day helps us remember that.
  5. Raising Awareness: It's a time to learn more about the challenges and opportunities that international students face. They might have problems like not knowing the language or having less money, but in today's global world, they also have lots of chances to learn and grow.

International Students Day is a symbol of coming together, learning without borders, and enjoying the different cultures that international students bring to schools around the world. It's a day to appreciate what they do, recognize how strong they are, and make sure they get the rights and chances they need for their education.
