Vocabulary and Types of Vocabulary

Vocabulary plays a crucial role in the reading process and in how readers understand what they read. It encompasses the words essential for effective communication, including both words we understand (receptive vocabulary) and words we use (expressive vocabulary).

Receptive vocabulary comprises words we encounter in listening and reading, whereas expressive vocabulary consists of words we use in speaking and writing. It is accurate to say that communication is impossible without a sufficient vocabulary.

Vocabulary Definition

Vocabulary can be described as "the collection of words utilized in a particular language." It encompasses all the words you comprehend while reading, writing, or listening to someone. In essence, your vocabulary comprises the words you grasp, perceive, and interpret within the appropriate context. Therefore, the more effort you invest in understanding a word's meaning, the more robust your vocabulary becomes.

Types of Vocabulary

There are four distinct types of vocabulary crucial for effective communication with children:

Reading Vocabulary:

A significant aspect of vocabulary development involves reading. This category encompasses words and letters recognized while reading texts. Sometimes, words can be understood in reading even if they are not commonly used in speech.

Speaking Vocabulary:

Speaking vocabulary consists of words used during verbal communication. Typically, adults rely on a vocabulary of around 5000 to 10000 words for giving instructions and engaging in conversations. The speaking vocabulary is relatively limited, often due to the challenges of speaking in a second language.

Writing Vocabulary:

Your ability to spell words significantly impacts your writing vocabulary. This type of vocabulary pertains to words you need to know when writing. Expressing thoughts verbally, using facial expressions, is easier than expressing them in writing. Therefore, your writing vocabulary depends on your language proficiency.

Listening Vocabulary:

Listening vocabulary comprises words understood through hearing. Remarkably, even a sixteen-week-old fetus can recognize some words in the womb by hearing sounds. By adulthood, most individuals can comprehend nearly 50000 words through listening. Deaf children rely on visual listening through sign language, although their vocabulary is generally smaller than that of children with hearing abilities.

Tiers of Vocabulary

English vocabulary is categorized into three tiers, which greatly facilitate teaching the language to children.

Basic Vocabulary:

Basic vocabulary encompasses the fundamental words familiar to your child, used in their everyday conversations. Children are exposed to these words from a young age, becoming well-acquainted with them. Basic vocabulary includes sight words, adjectives, verbs, and nouns such as sad, happy, clean, fast, table, baby, rain, and more.

Low Frequency Vocabulary:

Low-frequency vocabulary consists of domain-specific words, essential primarily in specific areas like science, math, geography, and technology. These words are specialized and not commonly used in everyday language. Examples include molecule, legislates, osmosis, and isosceles.

High Frequency Vocabulary:

High-frequency vocabulary comprises words not commonly used in daily conversations but are found in books and written texts, especially in literature. These words often have multiple meanings. Examples of high-frequency words include harmony, valuable, amiable, estimate, synonyms, and cluster. A diverse vocabulary enhances a child's communication skills. Therefore, it is crucial for children to have a comprehensive understanding of vocabulary. If a child struggles with language complexities, there are various methods available to help them memorize and grasp vocabulary effectively.
