Tiger Reserves in India: In April 1973, the Bengal Tiger was designated as the National animal of India, replacing the Lion, as part of the Project Tiger initiative aimed at conserving endangered species. This move was prompted by the tiger's endangered status acc. to IUCN Red Data Book.
To address the conservation efforts, India established the Tiger Reserves in 1973, recognizing the urgent need to protect these majestic creatures. Presently, there are 54 tiger reserves in India.These reserves are managed under Project Tiger and overseen by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). St. Petersburg Declaration | In 2010, leaders from 13 tiger range nations, including India, gathered at the Petersburg Tiger Summit. They pledged to double the wild tiger population globally and ensure their protection. The initiative was coined as "TX2." |
