Who Are Indigenous Peoples?
Indigenous peoples are ethnic groups native to a specific region or country. They have unique cultures, traditions, languages, and beliefs that set them apart from the dominant populations. According to the United Nations website, there are over 476 million indigenous people worldwide, living in 90 countries. Indigenous Peoples make up less than 6% of the global population but represent at least 15% of the extremely poor. Their territories cover 28% of the Earth's surface and hold 11% of the world’s forests, making them vital guardians of biodiversity. Additionally, Indigenous food systems are highly self-sufficient , generating 50% to 80% of their food and resources. However, despite their right to autonomy, Indigenous Peoples in isolation face many challenges including developments that disrupt their way of life and destroy the environment they have protected for generations.History of International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples has its roots in the United Nations' efforts to recognize and support Indigenous communities. It was initiated after the first conference of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations (UNWGIP) held on August 9, 1982. Twelve years later, on December 23, 1994, the UN General Assembly officially designated August 9 as the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples through resolution 49/214 .
