Nagarhole Tiger Reserve Location

Nagarhole Tiger Reserve is located in Karnataka, a southern state of India. It spreads across the districts of Mysuru and Kodagu. The reserve forms a part of the Western Ghats, which is a chain of hills rich in greenery and wildlife.

• The park lies close to many well-known towns. Mysuru is about 90 kilometers away, while Bengaluru, the state capital, is around 220 kilometers from the reserve.
• It is also near Coorg, a popular hill station. The Kabini River flows through one side of the park and adds great charm to the surroundings.
• Nagarhole Tiger Reserve covers an area of about 850 square kilometers. The land is full of small hills, valleys, rivers, and streams.
• The word "Nagarhole" itself comes from two Kannada words: "Naga," meaning snake, and "Hole," meaning river. The winding streams inside the reserve look like snakes, which gave rise to this name.

History of Nagarhole Tiger Reserve

In earlier times, the forests of Nagarhole were used as hunting grounds by the kings of Mysore. The Wodeyar rulers protected these lands as their private game reserve. 

• The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955. With time, the importance of protecting the animals grew.
• In 1988, the government gave it the status of a national park. Later, it became part of Project Tiger, a national plan to save tigers.
• Today, Nagarhole stands as a symbol of India’s efforts to conserve its natural wealth.

Nagarhole Tiger Reserve Flora and Fauna

The forests of Nagarhole are thick and green. They have moist deciduous trees, whereas Bamboo and shrubs also grow in plenty. In some areas, dry deciduous forests are found. Nagarhole is home to a wide range of creatures. The tiger is the main attraction, but leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, and hyenas also live here.

Conservation Efforts in Nagarhole Tiger Reserve

Protecting the animals and forests of Nagarhole is a top priority. The park is part of Project Tiger, which was launched in 1973 to save tigers across India. It is also included under Project Elephant, a program to safeguard the large elephant herds.

• The Karnataka Forest Department has strict rules against hunting and tree cutting. Anti-poaching squads patrol the forest regularly. Awareness campaigns are conducted to teach villagers about the importance of wildlife.
• NGOs and researchers also work with the government to study animal behavior and improve protection.
• Eco-tourism is encouraged so that people can enjoy the park without harming it. Limited entry, guided safaris, and regulated lodges are part of these measures.

Challenges in Nagarhole Tiger Reserve

Even though many steps have been taken, the reserve faces several problems. One of the biggest issues is poaching, where hunters kill animals for skin, horns, or meat.

• Another challenge is the loss of forest due to farming and road building near the park. When people clear land for crops or houses, animals lose their homes. This sometimes leads to conflict between humans and wildlife.
• Tourism, if not managed well, can also disturb the natural balance. Noise, waste, and too many visitors may harm the animals.
• Climate change is yet another threat, as it affects rainfall and the health of the forests.
