CAN

The full form of CAN in computers is Campus Area Network." A CAN is a computer network that is spread across a specific geographical area. In other words, it is an interconnection of a group of local area networks within a particular area. It enables fast and secure data exchange between devices within a defined area, like schools, college campuses, offices, or organizations.

All the networking in a CAN is mostly controlled by the company that owns the campus or area. Academic institutions like schools, colleges, and universities CAN enable both students and other faculty members access to a network. It is also used to share data within the network. Moreover, data transfer is much faster than transferring data through the public internet.

What is CAN in a Computer?

The Campus Area Network is an interconnected group of Local Area Networks in a defined area. It is actually smaller than the Wide Area Network (WAN) and Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), but larger than the Local Area Network.

Thus, it is mostly connected to a public Internet to give high-speed and reliable communication to the users while allowing them to access the wider Internet. For example, CAN connects various buildings on campus, helping to interconnect other departments and computer laboratories.

The Campus Area Network is also known as the Corporate Area Network. Since it is used by the residents of a specific place, it is also referred to as a Residential Network or ResNet. It can cover about 1 to 5 kilometers of distance and can have a wired as well as a wireless connection. Please note that in a CAN, all connected computers have some relationship with each other.

Furthermore, CAN provides its users with access to shared resources, such as printers, servers, and storage devices, which can be located anywhere within the campus. It allows for efficient collaboration between users and enables them to access the resources they need when they need them.

Structure of CAN

Let us discuss the structure of a campus area network (CAN). A CAN consists mainly of networking resources such as routers, hubs, wires, switches, etc. The LANs are interconnected with routers and switches within a geographical area. The nodes are connected with fiber optics and use 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology. Now let us discuss this structure of CAN in more detail.

  1. Data link layer- This layer ensures security to data transfer by providing error correction. It also helps to solve conflicts in communication.
  2. Physical layer-  It helps in transferring the bits over the network cable.
  3. Nodes-  Nodes are the part that is responsible for transmitting messages to and fro the network. It is because these devices are actually connected to the network.
  4. Message protocol- The message protocol helps in defining the format of messages that are transmitted over the network.
  5. Bus- It contains all the nodes to form a single cable or a pair of cables. Thus, it forms the channel through which the exchange of information takes place.

Benefits of CAN

Now, let us know about some advantages of the campus area network.

  1. It is secure- A CAN network is constantly checked, tracked and monitored by the administrators. Also, it has firewalls for security and prevents any unauthorized access thus, making it secure.
  2. It is fast- Since, communication in a CAN is over a Local area network, it is actually faster than the internet. So it can transfer large files in less time.
  3. It is cost-effective- CAN enables fast data transfer with less maintenance cost. It can also be wireless which cuts off the wiring cost.
  4. It is easily accessible- It allows easy accessibility of data within various departments of a campus.
  5.  It can share an internet connection- CAN network is able to share an internet connection.

Limitations of CAN

Here are some disadvantages of campus area network (can)

  1. It has a limited number of nodes. It cannot support a large number of nodes due to electrical leads.
  2. There are unnecessary interactions between nodes.
  3. It supports only a limited geographical area.

Importance of CAN

The CAN network technology has become very important for modern organizations. It is because of the benefits provided by CAN. Here are some of the importance of CAN.

  1. Improves productivity- CAN is capable of seamless communication and has made data transfer between different departments very easy. This has led to more Association as well as productivity.
  2. Better resource utilization- CAN makes use of servers, printers, switches, etc and reduces so much cost. It also ensures better utilization of these devices.
  3. More security- CAN network has a proxy server and firewall for the security of data. It also stops any unauthorized access, thus making it more secure.
  4. Increased flexibility - Since it can give wireless access to resources, it allows employees to work from anywhere within the network coverage. Thus, it has increased flexibility and mobility.
  5. More adaptable- A CAN network can be easily modified or expanded according to the required needs. Thus, making it very beneficial.

Examples of CAN

Some examples of Campus Area Network includes-

  1. Educational Institutions: CAN is used in educational institutions like schools, colleges and universities to connect different departments with each other.
  2. Industrial control systems: CAN networks are used in industrial control systems such as machine tools, conveyor systems, and process control systems.
  3. Automotive CAN networks: Automobiles use CAN networks to connect different electronic control units (ECUs) such as engine control units, transmission control units, and anti-lock braking systems.
  4. Aerospace and military applications: CAN networks are used in aerospace and military applications, such as aircraft systems and missile guidance systems.
  5. Medical devices: CAN networks are used in medical devices such as ventilators, dialysis machines, and patient monitoring systems, to ensure reliable communication between the different parts of the device.
