India and Indonesia participate in other naval exercises and training in addition to patrol exercises. It includes IND-INDO CORPAT and a bilateral naval exercise called Saumdra Shakti.

Significance of CORPAT

India and several of its neighbours have carried out CORPAT projects. It includes Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, and Myanmar. These programs have improved communication and trust between parties. Also, it promotes regional stability and security.

History of CORPAT: Beginning of the CORPAT Exercise

The Indian Navy and Indonesian Navy initiated the CORPAT exercise in 2002. It was the first exercise held in the Andaman Sea and the Strait of Malacca.

Since then, the exercise has been conducted annually between the two navies. It is conducted between India and several countries, Thailand, Singapore, and Bangladesh. These countries are in the Indian Ocean Region. But, the exercise area keeps alternating between Indian and Indonesian waters. Also, exercise has been held in different areas of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Some are the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Lombok Strait.

Over the years, the CORPAT exercise has evolved to encompass various elements and techniques. Also, it has been complemented by other joint naval exercises and training programs. Such as the IND-INDO CORPAT and Samudra Shakti.

Eligibility for CORPAT: Who Can Take Part?

  • The exercise is open to the officers and sailors of the Indian Navy assigned to the ships or aircraft.
  • The Indonesian officers and sailors assigned to ships and planes may take part.
  • Each participant must be physically fit and adhere to the navies' standards.
  • All the participants in the exercise must have the appropriate security clearance.
  • Moreover, English skill is required since it is the language used for communication during the exercise.
  • Also, participants must have the necessary training and experience to perform the tasks assigned to them during the exercise.

Besides, participants must follow the rules and regulations of the exercise. Also, follow the instructions given by their respective commanders.

CORPAT Fleet 

The Indian Navy deploys ships, including patrol vessels, frigates, and other maritime assets. A senior officer typically leads the fleet. They are responsible for coordinating various activities. Also, they ensure that the exercise objectives are met.

  • Patrol Vessels: 

Patrol vessels are smaller naval ships. They are specifically designed for coastal water patrolling and surveillance. They have radars and other sensors for detecting activities inside.  

  • Frigates: 

These are larger naval vessels that are designed for long-range patrols. They have weapon systems and radar for detecting and engaging threats.

  • Helicopters: 

The CORPAT fleet deploys helicopters to provide transportation and surveillance capabilities.

  • Support Ships: 

These auxiliary vessels, such as fuel, food, and ammunition, support the fleet.

The composition of the CORPAT fleet is determined based on the exercise objectives and the capabilities of the participating countries. A senior naval officer leads the fleet. They are responsible for various activities and ensuring the goals are met.

The participating countries conduct coordinated patrols in their respective maritime zones during the exercise. This helps to improve the capabilities of the participating countries.

CORPAT Methods: How Is CORPAT Performed?

The navies of the participating nations engage in joint patrols and training exercises. The patrols are carried out in each other's territorial waters. They could consist of surface ships, submarines, planes, and other assets. 

During patrols, the navies collaborate, share information with the watch, and address potential threats. This could involve conducting surveillance, interdiction, and search and rescue operations.

To strengthen their coordination, the participating navies also engage in joint training. Exercises like search and rescue drills and live fire drills may be included.
