What is ABD?

ABD is defined as All but dissertation, meaning you have taken all courses to earn your doctorate coursework but have not written and defended your dissertation.

PhD is not a normal degree you have to complete all the research to get the degree. Whereas ABD is not an academic term but it is used to tell others where you are in the PhD programme. It simply means you have completed all the doctorate coursework but have not written and defended your dissertation. 

For instance, if your destination is home but you are still 5 km away from home then you will tell others about the current location. Similarly, ABD is used to tell others where you are in the journey to complete the PhD.

Is ABD a PhD degree?

No, ABD is not a PhD degree even if it is not defined as any degree. There is a misconception of ABD is that it is a degree in PhD. All but dissertation(ABD) is just a terminology which is used to define where you have reached in the doctorate degree. 

The dissertation means the written documents summarized your research work. It is the final step to complete your PhD programme therefore  ABD brings you close to completing your doctorate degree but it is not a degree. Some fields of the PhD programme may not require the dissertation process but in most of the programmes, it is important to summarize your research work. 

Some doctorate students also stop at ABD and do not complete their doctorate degrees. Well ABD is not a degree so the students can’t claim to be PhDian. Let’s try to find out why doctorates students stop at ABD.

Why do doctorate students stop at ABD?

Almost 50% of the doctorate students do not complete their doctorate degree and leave the degree at All but the dissertation stage. There are so many reasons why students leave the PhD at the last level. Some of the reasons are mentioned below - 

• Lack of Money 

Money is the biggest problem for students pursuing a doctorate degree. PhD is a very time taking degree for students. Many students also take loans for their PhD degree and they don't have any option but to leave when they run out of money. 

• Demotivation 

The long-term degree of a PhD can create self-doubts for students. Sometimes failure leads you to feel demotivated and also creates negativity among students. Due to a lack of confidence in themselves, students put their doctorate degrees on pause or leave altogether. 

• Personal problems 

At the stage of the PhD lots of students face personal and family problems. This has also become a reason to quit their degree. Not everyone can handle so much pressure at the same time.

• Dissertation rejection 

The dissertation is the last stage of the doctorate degree and sometimes it may get rejected. The last stage of rejection can cause mental damage to the students and it has also become a reason to stop the PhD.

The ABD stands for All But Dissertation. ABD is the terminology used for defining the stage of the PhD. It simply means you have completed all the doctorate coursework but have not written and defended your dissertation. Many students left the degree without completing it or at the time dissertation. A dissertation is defined as the last stage of PhD but due to lack of money and personal issues, students left the degree at the ABD stage.
