What is ISI
The ISI stands for Indian Standards Institution. ISI was established to build the standards for industry growth and maintain the efficiency of industrial output. Since 1950, it provides an ISI mark which is a standards-compliance mark for industrial products in India.
The ISI Standard is one of the most famous and well-recognized certification marks in India. It ensures that the goods are manufactured under the guidelines of India Standards specified by the Indian Standard Institute.
History of ISI
- The Indian Standards Institution (ISI) was established on 06 January 1947. The first director of ISI was Dr. Lal C. Verman in June 1947.
- In the beginning, the organization focused on standardization activity. To offer the benefits of standardization to common consumers, the ISI began operating the Certification Marks Scheme under the Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act, 1952.
- Furthermore, the Scheme, which was officially launched by ISI in 1955-56, allowed to grant licences to manufacturers making goods in conformity with Indian Standards and to apply ISI Mark on their products.
- In 1963, the nucleus of a laboratory was started to fulfill the Certification Marks Scheme requirements.
