The area under China's and India's control is divided by a line known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Although not recognised as an official border, it serves as a de facto border between the two nations. After the Sino-Indian War of 1962, certainly China took control of much of the disputed region.
In recent years, India and China have strengthened their military presence along the LAC. India is constructing new roads and infrastructure in the region. And also China is increasing its military presence and building new military bases in the area. This raises worries that the LAC can become a battleground for future conflicts between the two nations.
Where is LAC located?
The LAC runs through the western sector of the India-China border, known as the Aksai Chin region. This region is located in the western Himalayas and is of strategic importance to both India and China as it provides access to the Karakoram Pass, which connects China to Pakistan. This eastern sector of the border, is known as the Arunachal Pradesh region. The LAC is not clearly demarcated. Its exact location is the cause of an ongoing dispute between India and China. Both countries have different perceptions of where the LAC lies, leading to several territorial disputes and incidents of military standoffs in the past. In recent years, there have been several instances of Chinese troops crossing the LAC and entering Indian territory, which have led to tensions between the two countries.Issues with the LAC
The lack of clear markings on the ground makes it difficult for responders on either side to locate the border, causing one of the biggest problems with the LAC. The two countries have also established a number of confidence-building measures. The measures include regular flag meetings between military officials and a hotline between their militaries, to reduce tensions along the border.
