What is NALCO?
National Aluminium Company Limited is an Indian company principally engaged in the manufacture and sale of alumina and aluminium. Chemical and Aluminium are the Company's segments.
The Company operates a 22.75 lakh tons per annum (TPA) alumina refinery plant at Damanjodi, Koraput district, Odisha, and a four lakh TPA aluminium smelter in Angul, Odisha. It also features a captive thermal power plant with a capacity of over 1200 megawatts (MW) close to the smelting plant.
The largest integrated bauxite-alumina-aluminium-power complexes in the nation are National Aluminium Company Limited. Currently, the Government of India owns 51.28% of the paid-up equity. The company has run its captive Panchpatmali Bauxite Mines for the pit head alumina refinery at Damanjodi and so on.
NALCO has erected an 800 kWp rooftop solar power plant in various places around India to achieve carbon neutrality. Since its first commercial activity began in 1987, it has been profitable for 35 years.
Expansions
- The company has developed a New All-Weather Business Model to make it more resilient to market whims. It has definite plans for brownfield and greenfield growth projects, some of which are now underway.
- These projects include the development of the Pottangi bauxite mines, the Utkal D&E coal mines in Odisha, and the building of 5 lakh TPA brownfield smelters in that state.
- The company is constructing a caustic soda plant in Gujarat in a joint venture with Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals Limited (GACL) and a CT Pitch factory in Odisha in a joint venture with NINL as part of backward integration.
- To promote ancillary, upstream, and downstream products associated with the aluminum industry, the business launched a joint venture company called "Angul Aluminium Park Private Ltd" (AAPPL) with Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO).
Research & Development
- The NALCO Research & Technology Centre (NRTC) is set up in the Odisha city of Bhubaneswar.
- NALCO has established a world-class research facility at Gothapatna, Bhubaneswar. As part of its pursuit of organizational growth through sustained advancement in the process, product, and technology. Through research, development, and innovation activity.
- The company is working to recover iron concentrate from red dirt and gallium from used liquor as part of its quest to turn waste into wealth. To address the long-standing fluoride pollution issue in the area, the company has also successfully commissioned a first-of-its-kind de-fluoridation process based on nanotechnology to clean up the flowing water from Smelter.
