What Exactly is Geomatics Engineering?

Engineering is a field that is innovative and will always be in high demand, given the technological advancements and demand for exemplary infrastructure.

Geomatics is a field of engineering that includes the technologies and methods used to collect, distribute, store, analyze, process, and present data.

It is a growing field globally and paves the way for several career opportunities in field jobs and desk jobs.

Furthermore, Geomatics Engineering graduates can work in both private and public sectors on a variety of projects that aren't limited to physical barriers.

In simpler words, geomatics is a field that revolves around the following fields:

  • Geodesy
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Global Positioning System (GPS)
  • Mapping
  • Hydrography
  • remote sensing
  • surveying
  • And lastly, photogrammetry.

Moreover, the main focus of this field lies in the technology, products, and services used to gather, analyze, and manage spatial data.

Things to Know About Geomatics

  • Geomatics is the science of deriving information about objects using sensors without physically getting in touch with the object. This process is called remote sensing and is an integral part of geomatics.
  • Remote sensing technology is used to provide millions of data points on structures and land.

The Equipment, Technologies, and Methodologies used are:

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS): These are computers and software used to gather and analyze data about geographic locations and their relation to human and/or natural activity on the Earth.
  • Geodesy and Geomatics: Without a doubt, geodesy is an important part of geomatics, as it is the science of math that determines the size and shape of the earth and the nature of the earth’s gravity field.
  • Surveying: Surveyors use satellites, sonar, software, drone technology, maps, and 3D scanning to establish boundaries in land, waterways, and airspace.
  • Location-Based Services (LBS): A location-based service provides a person with information and/or services in the location where the user's device is located.
  • Remote sensing: This is the science of getting information about objects and phenomena by measuring the radiation that is emitted and reflected.
  • Lidar Geomatics: Lidar is the art of using light in the form of pulsed lasers to measure distances to the Earth. This helps create a precise 3D model with information about the characteristics as well as the shape of the earth.

Applications of Geomatics

Geomatics can be applied in the following areas:

  • In estimating crop yields
  • In monitoring the environment and climate change,
  • Conducting aeromagnetic surveys
  • In infrastructure management
  • In land management and reform
  • In meteorology
  • In subdivision planning
  • In oceanography
  • in seismic interpretation
  • In monitoring and developing natural resources
  • In airborne geophysics
  • In managing and mapping coastal zones
  • In classifying and mapping land cover,
  • In surveys for sample frames

What is the job of a geomatics engineer?

A geomatics engineer uses sensors on land, in the air, in the ocean, and on satellites to gather data. With the help of the data collected, they can develop information systems (IS) to plan land use as well as analyze landscapes.

Is geomatics a good career?

Yes, geomatics is a good career option because not only is it a well-paying profession, but you also get to travel a lot, do research in various ecosystems, and have the opportunity to enter the academic field. Most importantly, there is a huge demand for this occupation, and no matter if you get a private job or a government job, the work is challenging and you always get to learn new things.

What is geomatic engineering in simple terms?

Geomatics engineering, in simple terms, is an information systems discipline that deals with acquiring, modelling, analyzing, and managing spatial data. This data is used for land tenures, oceanography, meteorology, crop yield determination, or seismic interpretation, to name a few.

What is the salary of geomatics engineers in India?

The salary of geomatics engineers in India varies from organization to organization. Depending on what kind of job it is, i.e., private or government, the salary and benefits change. For instance, in India, the government pays an average salary of INR 500,000 to 10,000,000 with benefits.  Some private companies match the salary, but in most cases, the salary range is between INR 410,000 and INR 810,000 per year. The average salary in this field for freshers is INR 560,000.

What are the career options for geomatics engineers?

The career opportunities and possibilities are endless. While some prefer the technical aspects of the job, there are also many teaching posts available. Some examples of the posts available are: GIS Developer GIS specialist Urban Planner Mapper Surveyor (project surveyor or professional land surveyor) Moreover, some of the scopes in GE after graduation can be in the following areas:  Digital imaging Earth observation GPS, or global positioning system Geographic information systems (GIS) Land tenure And lastly, satellite-based navigation
