HPAS

The full form of HPAS is Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service. 

What is HPAS?

The Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service (HPAS) Examination is a competitive exam conducted by the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) to recruit candidates for various administrative positions in the state government of Himachal Pradesh.

The HPAS Exam is among the most prestigious and sought-after exams in Himachal Pradesh.

HPAS - Overview 

The HPAS exam is conducted in three stages: Preliminary, Mains, and Interview. The Preliminary Exam is an objective-type exam that tests the candidate's General Studies and Aptitude Test knowledge.

The candidates who clear the Preliminary Exam are eligible to appear for the Mains Exam, which consists of subjective-type papers on various subjects, such as 

  1. English, 
  2. Hindi 
  3. General Studies, 
  4. Two optional subjects.

Finally, the candidates who clear the Mains Exam are called for a Personal Interview.

Eligibility Criteria for HPAS Examination

Age limitation

The age limit for the Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service (HPAS) Examination varies depending on the candidate's category. The age limits for different types are as follows:

  • The minimum age limit for candidates in the General category is 21 years, and the maximum is 35 years.
  • For candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories, the maximum age limit is relaxed by five years. Therefore, the maximum age limit for these categories is 40 years.
  • The maximum age limit for candidates already in government service is relaxed by 5 years, subject to a maximum age limit of 45 years.

It is important to note that the age limit is calculated as of January 1 of the year the HPAS Examination notification is released. Candidates eligible per the age limits can apply for the examination and appear in the recruitment process.

Nationality 

  • To be eligible for the Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service (HPAS) Examination, a candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • Additionally, candidates subject to the jurisdiction of the state of Himachal Pradesh are also eligible to apply for the examination.

The eligibility criteria for the HPAS Examination may vary year to year. Candidates are advised to read the official notification released by the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) to ensure they meet all the eligibility requirements before applying for the examination.

Education Qualification

  • The educational qualification required for the Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service (HPAS) Examination is a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised university. 
  • Candidates in the final year of their Bachelor's Degree or awaiting the results of their final year examination are also eligible to apply for the HPAS Examination.
  • There are no specific subject requirements for the HPAS Examination, and candidates from any academic background are eligible to apply. 
  • However, candidates must have a good knowledge of English and Hindi, the two languages used for the examination.
  • In addition to the educational qualification, candidates must also meet other eligibility criteria, such as 
    • Age limit
    • Nationality 
    • Physical fitness standards

HPAS Exam Pattern

The Preliminary Exam is the first stage of the HPAS Examination and is an objective-type exam consisting of two papers - General Studies and an Aptitude Test. 

Preliminary Exam 

The General Studies paper tests the candidates' knowledge in various subjects, such as

  • Indian Polity, 
  • Economy, 
  • Geography, 
  • History, 
  • Environment, 
  • Current Affairs. 

Aptitude test paper

The Aptitude Test paper tests the candidates':

  • Reasoning, 
  • Numerical, 
  • Verbal abilities.

Candidates who clear the Preliminary Exam are eligible to appear for the Mains Exam, the second stage of the HPAS Examination.

What are the vacancies for HPAS posts?

The HPAS exam provides notification for job openings in various positions, including the  Himachal Pradesh Police Service,  Assistant Registrar,   District Controller,  Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service,  Block Development Officer,  Tehsildar.

What is the HPAS exam application fee?

The application fee for the HPAS exam was INR 400 for General category candidates, while candidates belonging to reserved categories such as SC, ST, OBC, and Below the Poverty Line (BPL) of Himachal Pradesh had to pay a reduced fee of INR 100. Ex-servicemen and visually handicapped candidates were exempted from paying any application fee.

How many HPAS attempts can be made?

According to the official notification, there are no limits on the number of attempts a candidate can make for the HPAS exam, provided they meet the eligibility criteria, including age requirements.

Can final-year applicants take the HPAS Exam?

Per the HPAS exam eligibility criteria, candidates in their final year of qualifying examinations can apply and appear for the exam.

How many exam centres are there for HPAS Exam?

There is only one exam centre in Shimla for the HPAS exam.
