IBT

The full form of an IBT is an Internet-Based Test. This is a type of standardized test conducted online in various academic institutions or government organizations. This shift from the traditional examination to this internet-based test has recently gained momentum with the hitting of covid-19 crisis.

The turn towards the online learning system has been like a response to the challenging circumstances that have facilitated the need for Internet-based testing solutions.

What is an Internet-Based Test?

The IBT test is like the Computer Based Test (CBT) test that is given online. In other words, these are online exams. IBT has the access to cover a wide range of skills. This includes technical skills, educational achievements, as well as language skills.  Also, this also gives a chance to connect with large groups of people efficiently. Also the one can take the test from anywhere if there is a working internet connection.

How Do Internet-Based Tests Work?

When we are talking about IBTs, let us understand how the Internet Based Test works. The IBTs are actually monitored through an online platform or a website. Taking the test through IBTs is quite simple. To take that test, one has to log in to the platform, give the assessment, and then simply submit the answers. The test is evaluated  and the scorecard and report are generated.

Types of Internet Based Tests

Now, let us mention the two types of IBTs. These are Proctored IBTs and Unproctored IBTs. While proctored IBT tests are under the supervision of a proctor, unproctored IBTs have no such supervision.

Proctored IBTs are used for formal assessment, like high-stakes tests, certification exams, entrance exams, admissions in educational institutions etc. On the other hand, Unproctored IBTs are used in less formal tasks like language tests, employee skill tests etc.

Proctored IBTs

As mentioned earlier, a Proctored IBT test is monitored. Thus, it is able to detect malpractice by detecting devices like tablets, smartwatches, mobile phones, etc. Also, note that the proctor can be a human or AI-powered software.

The main reason for a proctor is to examine that there is no sort of cheating occurring during the test. With this Proctored IBT test minimize the chances of any misconduct. Moreover, this test gives a detailed result as well as feedback on the test taker's performance. Furthermore, this result is also received in no time.

Unproctored IBTs

Unproctored IBT exams are more liberal and here no one is actually checking any misconduct. Thus, Unproctored IBTs are less secure and authentic. But, they are flexible. This is because one can give the test anytime and from any location, with a stable internet connection. Moreover, unproctored IBT results are also quick.

Advantages and Disadvantages of IBT

Now, let us discuss the advantages and disadvantages of IBT.

Advantages of Internet-Based Tests

These Internet Based Tests have several advantages. Now, let us look at these advantages of IBTs.

  1. They are convenient- IBTs are actually very convenient as they can be taken at any location with an internet connection. Moreover, it makes it very easy to access more people quickly and more efficiently, in the comfort of their homes.
  2. IBTs are flexible- IPTs are designed in such a way that they can have various types of questions. This includes multiple choice essay-type questions, fill in the blanks questions etc. Also, there is access to a wide range of skills and knowledge too.
  3. They can give fast results- Since the results in the IBT exam are generated by the computer they are fast. Thus, the results are very quick compared to the pen-paper tests, and very helpful especially when results are needed fast.
  4. It is cost-effective- IBT exam reduces the cost that was used for traditional paper-based tests. Apart from the printing cost, there is no transportation cost for the applicants to reach the exam centre.
  5. Eco-friendly- Undoubtedly, IBTs have made the exam process more environmentally friendly as the need for paper is now minimized.

Disadvantages of Internet-Based Tests

Along with the advantages, IBTs also come with several disadvantages too that includes-

  1. Technical problems- Since the IBT exam is a technical invention, there is a constant fear of technical glitches. So, in case of such problems, the exam may get canceled.
  2. Less secure- Even though proctored IBTs provide security. But, in the case of unproctored IBTs there are chances of cheating or malpractice. Thus, they are not that secure.
  3. Less or no interaction- IBTs are not that interactive especially when a test is unproctored. Also, there is no chance to make sure whether the test taker is following the rules of conduct or not. Thus, it makes the entire process somehow unreliable.

Challenges for IBTs

Let us look at some challenges for IBTs that need to be tackled. The challenges include-

  • Technical issues- Since IBTs are dependent on the internet, there are chances of problems that may arise due to slow internet. Also, there can be system crashes, power outages, etc, that in turn will affect the test taker's performance and results.
  • Not accessible to everyone - One of the major challenges for the IBTs is accessibility. People who don't have a reliable internet connection or a computer system cannot actually access these tests. Thus, participation is only limited to those who have access to the internet.
  • Adaptability- IBTs are only suitable for those who are technically forward, because someone with no technical knowledge may struggle to perform on the platform, which may also adversely affect their results.
