ISPAT

The full form of ISPAT is Iodized Salt Program Assessment Tool.

What is the Iodized Salt Program Assessment Tool?

ISPAT, otherwise known as the Iodized Salt Program Assessment Tool, is a programme with the aim of providing a holistic framework for assessing and monitoring salt iodization to ensure the following:

  • Product quality
  • An efficient and effective programme for managing, processing, and monitoring the impact of iodine

The ISPAT programme basically offers a simple and cost-effective mechanism to track and sustain progress towards their goal: ensuring adequate iodine nutrition all over the world. Moreover, it will ensure that iodine deficiency disorders (IDD scourge) are eliminated and will look at methods to ensure they do not recur in the future.

What is the Importance of Iodine?

Iodine is a vital micronutrient needed to produce thyroxine. Thyroxine, which is a thyroid hormone, is essential for the production, growth, and development of the brain as well as the central nervous system, and since it is not produced by the body, it is therefore essential to be integrated into one’s diet.

Iodine helps prevent IDD which is a global public health concern in many developing nations, especially in Ethiopia and parts of Asia.

What is Iodized Salt?

Salt is mostly derived from sea and rock deposits and may come in several forms. Iodized salt is just a refined version of sea salt, which means it has been fortified with iodine.

Iodized salt is important for the following reasons:

  • Firstly, it produces hormones that regulate the heart rate as well as blood pressure.
  • Secondly, it aids in the burning of excess fat deposits, which may result in heart disease.
  • It improves electrolyte balance and optimal hydration levels.
  • Lastly, it helps keep harmful bacteria in the gut from multiplying.

Humans need iodized salt to produce thyroxine. It is a hormone released by the thyroid gland that controls fat metabolism, glucose, and protein synthesis and ensures the body has an optimal growth balance.

A deficiency in iodine can lead to goiter and other diseases. Therefore, it is important to have a well-balanced meal with an adequate amount of iodized salt.

Important Food Sources of Iodine

Iodine can be found in various foods, some of which are listed below:

  • Eggs
  • Cow milk
  • Cheese
  • Yoghurt
  • Ice cream
  • Iodized table salt
  • Multivitamins with Iodine
  • Fish (saltwater)
  • Seaweed
  • Soy sauce
  • Shellfish

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the median iodine level be between 100 and 199μg/l to ensure adequate iodine content in salt and other iodine sources.

Additionally, iodized salt that contains 20 to 40 ppm of iodine, is also regarded as adequately iodized.

Further, the most effective method to prevent and control IDD is via iodization of salt as it is a staple in every household, especially in Asian and African ones.

A Brief About Iodine Deficiency

Iodine deficiency is a major cause of mental retardation in childhood and also causes goiter and hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, these diseases are prevalent in large parts of the world.

The solution to defeat IDD is to ensure that people consume adequate amounts of iodine in whatever form they choose, but since salt is an excellent carrier and regarded as highly safe, it is the preferred solution to fighting IDD.

In a nutshell, iodized salt is credited as a dietary staple as it has helped prevent about 750 million cases of goiter over the past few years. In fact, the Iodine Global Network and UNICEF estimate that about 6 billion people around the globe consume iodized salt, which is a significant achievement of large-scale food fortification.

What is a salt iodization program?

A salt iodization programme is one that intends that salt for consumption by humans and animals can be iodized, therefore ensuring adequate iodine nutrition. It was identified as a global strategy to eliminate iodine deficiency.

Which is the best indicator for monitoring the impact of iodine deficiency disorders control Programme?

The most useful indicator of iodine nutrition is the median urinary iodine concentration.

How do you measure iodine content?

To calculate the iodine content, the following formula is used: Iodine mg/kg (ppm) = titration volume in ml into (21.15) multiplied by the normality of sodium thiosulfate x 1000, divided by the sample weight of salt in grams (g).

What is the purpose of the iodine test for starch?

The purpose of the iodine test for starch is to test for the presence of carbohydrates.

What is the difference between salt and iodized salt?

The difference between salt and iodized salt is that the latter contains iodine to prevent any iodine deficiency. Since both salt and iodized salt contain the same amount of sodium, one is not healthier than the other, but iodized salt is necessary to produce thyroxin, which balances the body.
